I park my car outside caden house. I look at Sabrina in the back.
"Come on Rina. " I say getting out of the car. I wait for her to get out and I take her hand. We go up to the door and I ring the doorbell.
"Hey. Do you have to go to work? " He asks when he answers the door. He steps aside so we can go in. He's wearing a T-shirt and jeans.
"Not for a couple of hours. " I sit on the couch and Sabrina sits next to me. She hasn't taken her eyes off of her phone since we left the house.
"Rina get off of your phone. " I say.
"Stay strapped or get clapped. It's tough out in these streets. "She says not looking up from her phone. I grab her phone and shut it off.
" I don't know what streets you're in. "I say.
" Mom. "
"What? " I ask
"Why are we here? " She looks around the living room. I look at Caden. He shrugs.
"Sweets. I have to talk to you about something. "She looks at me.
" I want you to know that you can tell me how you feel about everything that I am going to tell you. "She nods and leans into me. I wrap my arm around her and look at Caden.
" Remember yesterday when I was at work and my friend was at home with you and Tyler? "She nods.
Oh my god. My heart is going to beat right out of my chest. I am so nervous. I have to tell her and I have no idea what to say. I look at Caden for help but he just states right back.
"So Caden is my friend from when I was in school. He is Uncle Jadens best friend. "I have no idea where I am going with this. I've never had this much trouble telling her something. Or anyone really.
" Why have I never seen him before then? "I sigh.
" Sabrina, your mom and I haven't been friends for a very long time. "Caden starts. At this point I'm just glad that he said anything. We didn't really talk about how we were going to tell her. And I think now that we are, we are just grasping at things to say.
" Why? Did mom drag you? "She asks arching an eyebrow. I roll my eyes.
" No she didn't but she should've. "He mutters.
" Oh my god don't say that. "I tell him.
"Your mom and I were in a relationship. And we always had arguments so we decided that we shouldn't be in a relationship or to be friends anymore. "
"Why are you telling her this. That is a complete lie. " I whisper to him.
"It's not a complete lie. We did the anullment and were friends but after you got pregnant you wanted nothing to do with me. " He whispers back. While he's talking I remember the story I told her about the disastrous date I had with him in Aspen.
"Remember the date that we had in Aspen. After everything. I told her that we went to dinner and after about the car and you pushing Jaden in the snow and locking him out. Tell her about that and let's hope she can connect the dots. " I whisper to him.
"Can I know what you're talking about? " Sabrina asks. We look at her.
"Caden wants to tell you a story. "
"So me ,your mom, and some friends went on a trip to Aspen in high school to go skiing and snowboarding. One night I wanted to take your mom on a date to this resteraunt that we both wanted to try. "
"What kind of resteraunt? " She asks.
"Italian. It was called Rinaldi's. " She nods.
"Mom loves Italian. " She says.
"I know. Anyways. When we were leaving the car wouldn't start so we decided that we were going to call someone to come and get us. The only one who answered the phone was Jaden. So he comes to get us to take us home and I decide to prank him. When we got home I pushed him in the snow and we locked him out of the house. "
"Did you let him in? " She asks fully invested in this story. A story that she heard before.
"Yes. I let him in because he would have gotten sick if we had left him out there. " I say.
"Mom, didn't you tell me this story about my dad? " I look at caden. I look back at Sabrina and nod.
"Yea. I told you on the way to paige's house. "
"Oh so you went on a date with Cadeeennnn. " She drags out his name in a teasing way. He laughs.
"Yea I did. "I snort.
" So did he know my dad? "She asks. I face palm and Caden groans.
" I thought you said she would connect the dots." He says.
"I said let's hope she would connect the dots. Honestly I was hoping she would just look at you and know. " I say. At this point we aren't even whispering.
"I'm still here. Grown ups are so weird. " She shakes her head.
"Ok Rina. Umm. Look at Caden. " She looks at Caden. I than hand her her phone with the camera up.
"Now look at you. " I say. She looks at herself through her phone.
"I look so beautiful today. You don't need to tell me things that I already know. " I scoff and roll my eyes.
"Do you think that you look like Caden. " She finally starts to look at herself and Caden, back and forth.
"We have the same eyes color. And hair color. " I nod. I know my daughter isn't this dumb. I just have to drop some clues.
"So what do you think that means?" I ask.
"I don't know but I think it's cool. " She says smiling.
"I give up. " I say.
"Just tell her. "Caden says.
" You tell her. "I say back.
" We need to tell her one way or another and our attempts so far haven't worked Tania. "
"I know Caden. I'm terrified though. What if she hates me? " I whisper.
"She won't hate you. Me on the other hand, thats a different story. "He says.
I'm just going to come out an tell her otherwise if we keep trying to have her connect the dots, we'd be her all day and I have to go to work. We really should've come up with a plan of attack for this. This is the most difficult thing ever. Like who the hell invented this type of thing. Why did Caden have to deny her? If he would've been here since the beginning, we wouldn't have to go through this. This is all his fault.
"Lord I hope this child is incapable of hate. " I murmured. I turn to her. I take her phone and set it on the couch.
"Sabrina. Caden is your dad. "
