Yoongi was true to his word and didn't call or text me the next few days. I did hear him speak with Hoseok, but that was about it. Malia and I met our moving deadline and got the apartment cleaned by Wednesday afternoon.
Hoseok and I spent the next couple of nights just relaxing at home, watching movies and binging on ice cream. We had some "playtime" as well.
Thursday morning came, and he and his family left for Maui around 10:00 am. He offered to let me stay at his place while they were gone, but I told him I was going to my mom's. I had to clean and set up my room there.
Before going to my mom's, I decided to stop at the State Archives again to see if I could find any more information about Yoongi and me. I figured since nuptials were announced in the newspaper, I'd look for our obituaries as well. I just didn't know what year to start with. I was hoping to find them based on our names.
I looked through the database, hoping the search would be quicker and easier that way. I decided to start from the 1980s and work backward using Min Yoongi. Nothing. I moved on to the 1970s, and still nothing. Next, the 1960s, 1950s, 1940s and 1930s. Still no obituary. I thought maybe we moved and were no longer living in Hawaii.
For the hell of it, I searched in the 1920s. There it was: Yoongi's obituary dated April 26, 1923, just eleven months after we were married. His obituary read:
Yoongi Min, age 25 of Honolulu, Hawaii, died on April 20, 1923 in a work-related accident. He is survived by his father, mother, brother and wife. Service will be held at the Little Chapel in Waikiki on Saturday, May 5 at 9:00am. Casual attire.
I fell to my knees shaking, and flashed back to the day he left me.
My office phone rang. "Hello?" I answered.
"Is this Mrs. Min?" a female voice asked.
"Yes, it is."
"This is Nurse Johnson at Queen's Hospital. We need you to come here as soon as you can. Your husband, Mr. Min Yoongi, was in an accident at work."
I panicked. "What? Is he okay?"
"I'm sorry, but I'm not at liberty to discuss his condition over the phone. Please come to the hospital," she instructed.
"Okay, I'll be there right away."
Crying and shaking, I asked one of my coworkers to take me to the hospital. When I got there, I went straight to the information desk and asked where to go. I was told to go to the emergency room, where I was greeted by Nurse Johnson and Dr. Clark.
"I'm Mrs. Min. I was asked to come down because my husband had been in an accident. Is he okay?" I asked frantically.
"Mrs. Min, I'm Dr. Clark. Let's go to that room and talk." The three of us sat in a private room.
"Earlier today, your husband was in the warehouse unloading several large crates. Unfortunately, a few of the crates fell onto him, crushing his chest," Dr. Clark said sympathetically. "Both his lungs collapsed and he broke several ribs and his collarbone, but the most crucial injuries were significant internal bleeding and organ damage. There's really not much more we can do for him but keep him as comfortable as possible."
I sat there silently, in total disbelief.
"Ms. Min, did you hear and understand what I just told you?" he asked.
I was trying to process everything he'd just said. Finally, I asked, "So are you telling me my husband is going to die?"
"Unfortunately, yes, Mrs. Min. He is," the doctor said.
