10:02 A.M. - Day 1

We had just disembarked from the bus and arrived at the spot. We were told to only bring our phones and leave our personal belongings on the bus.

All of the students were heading towards a compound. We entered the compound and were gathered at a decently-sized hall. Upon entering the hall, we were given a guidebook and a map that had already been separated into grids.

All of the students now have assembled in the hall and there was Mashima-Sensei standing in the front. There was a table with several pieces of equipment on top of it. Besides him were some school staff and the homeroom teachers of the first year.

"I will now explain the rules of the Special Exam. Your phones have been restricted from all functions other than receiving messages and scanning QR codes. The exam would start today at 11:30 A.M. and ends on the 17th at 8:00 A.M. Each team would be given what we call a 'beacon'."

Mashima-Sensei was holding the beacon. It was a cylindrical object made out of metal. It had a diameter of around 30cm (1ft) and a height of 75cm (2,5ft).

(It looked like a very huge water bottle).

"To put it simply, beacons are used to claim territory for your group. To place it down, you simply just have to stick it on any hard surface."

He demonstrated this by sticking the beacon into a rock. Four arms suddenly popped out of the beacon and stuck themselves on the ground like a claw. A QR code popped out from the screen on top of the beacon.

(Search Bacteriophage on google if you have a hard time imagining it).

"After putting it down, you would be given ten minutes for each group to scan the QR code. The beacon would be active only when all group members have scanned the QR code." He continued by scanning the beacon. The screen then changed into a timer.

"When you have successfully activated the beacon, an 8-hour timer would start. During that time, there would be a 250-meter (820ft) radius around the beacon. No other team could place a beacon in this radius."

He then placed another beacon and scanned down the code, this time using a different phone. The screen on the beacon showed a message 'Overlapping claims'.
