Had To Be You

You were asleep | Ch: 3

Evelyn: "Bro you serious! Wasn't it just a few hours ago that I told you, I was pissed off due to your behavior ".

Jasper: "I know I know, but I have to say this, at least we could have another chance ".

Evelyn: "Oh my god! You're sick! You were hitting on my best friend for the last three years and then you misbehaved with her, and when she's finally over you! You're starting to hit on me?!"

Jasper: "Oh no... Noo no no. Absolutely not, I was talking about Chloe. By another chance I meant Chloe and I. Because I certainly screwed the first chance that I had so I was kinda wishing that I could tell you about what really happened because I can't talk to Chloe after what I did. After seeing her in the washroom today how she was so worried about you I remembered how compassionate she is about the people that she cares about. That is what I was hoping to talk to you about in the library right before you started... saying things... you know."

Evelyn: "oh , oh!" I felt so embarrassed, "yeah... yeah, you make sense, I am sorry I thought something else."

Oh god I feel so stupid! Well I don't want to feel stupid anymore, I'd rather talk to him about whatever he's planning to tell. Jasper was worth giving a shot. So I texted him the address of a coffee shop nearby and said we could meet in the evening.

5:17pm

Oh shit shit shit I'm late... I get out of the bed and get changed. I was gonna meet him at 5:30, so I rush out of home but then I realize that mum might be worrying, cause she hasn't seen me since this morning. So I tell her that I was going to Chloe's place.

"But aren't you hungry? You haven't eaten since you came back" asks mum.

"I think I'll eat at Chloe's. I'll be home soon"

It was 5:45 and he was already standing there. We went inside, ordered a coffee and Jasper started explaining the whole thing.

"So it was almost the end of sophomore year and my grades couldn't get any worse. I couldn't study because my father recently had a heart attack and I had to go take care of our shop." Jasper's grandfather had a furniture shop with his brothers, they had some family conflicts going on and Jasper's grandfather ended up with almost nothing, so his father had to build the shop nearly from scratch.

That's all I remember Chloe telling me, from last year.

And Jasper continues "I had school, and swimming practice. By the end of the day I had nothing left in me to study for the exams." That's understandable.

"It was Wednesday, in the chemistry lab Mr. Holt gave us this experiment and I had no idea what the hell I was supposed to do with the test tubes in my hand. Hazel was sitting right beside me so she spared me the embarrassment and told me how to do it." That's very un-like Hazel, offering genuine help

"That day after the school was over, it started raining heavily and she didn't have an umbrella so I shared mine, with no other intention but to help her as she helped me. After that day we started talking to each other over the phone, in the class we became friends.... I guess, so she knew about almost everything that was going on with my father and my studies."

"Almost a week later Hazel comes up to me and offers me this huge favor which I wasn't ready to accept. She said that she can send a few workers to take care of the shop, so that I get some time to study. But I said that if I could pay someone to take care of the shop I would have hired someone myself but that's not possible. She said that I didn't have to pay them anything, it was just a friendly offer for being a good friend to her." Ah bummer.
