"Who is it"
"I don't know."
Evelyn: yes?
Unknown number: you okay now?
Evelyn: I'm sorry, but do I know you?
Unknown number: Danial
"Who's Danial?" asks Chloe. I ain't got a clue myself.
"I don't think I know a Danial." But I feel like I've heard the name. Have I? Danial.... Dan....ial. Wait. Dan?
"Hey, isn't Jasper's-"
Chloe gasps and says "Nooooouuuuhhhhhhh"
"Yeah......... I guess that's him."
"Whaaaaaaaaat??!!" Chloe squeaks. "How-? Whe-? What?"
"Chloe!!! Stop freaking out.... Help me here.... What do I say...." *typing... "Shit he's typing again...." Chloe snatches the phone out of my hand and starts typing.
Unknown number: you searching google or something?
Evelyn: hey.... Dan, how are you? No, I actually left my phone, my mum suddenly called, so...
Unknown number: I'm fine. You surprised that I got your number?
Evelyn: yeah... well kind of
Chloe is so good at this. I'm gonna let her handle this. I switch on the TV. Ah. Twilight. I go downstairs to grab a family size doritos. Why's Dan texting me? We barely had any conversation in the hospital.
Apart from the time when I was having a nightmare or something and he woke me up, gave me a cup of coffee, before which we were together on a spy mission where he kept blaming Liam for Jasper's condition.
He doesn't even know Liam, never met him, never talked to him. But then, I met Liam, we went on dates and we talked, we kissed. And I still couldn't figure out that he was lying to me until I came across that text.
Maybe I wouldn't have known if I didn't see that text. He would've kept lying to me. Maybe.
I enter the kitchen in search of food. Steve's still sitting on the couch with a bunch of papers. I tilt my head back to see if he's crying. Dude is always so nervous, sometimes I find it creepy.
I've even seen him, sweating due to mum's sudden calls. Once when I was four or five years old, mum took me to her shop. My nanny had an emergency so she couldn't come. I was sitting in the office.
The office was behind the shop, connected to it. It was big. Well it was more like a storehouse and office. On one side hung all the drawings, designs, budget charts, weekly, monthly and yearly targets.
Mum's really organized guess that's the only thing we have in common. I was sitting on a couch that was kept by the corner of that room, with a little TV. Mum was outside dealing with the customers.
Steve had recently joined, I remember cause I was the one who sold her out. I shut my eyes and smile at how cool that was. I saw her drawing out money from the cupboard in the back office and putting 'em all in her purse.
She didn't know I was in the washroom. Of course I told mum after she left. Steve was hired after that. He was even young back then. Even more nervous, talked really really really less.
Steve was making the monthly analytics in the back office and I was watching T.V. Mum suddenly opened the office door and called Steve.
He was so startled by the call, he screamed and released the papers from his hand into the air. Mum rolled her eyes and left. Steve started breathing so heavily that I left the couch and ran to hug him.
I remember telling him that "mum's not gonna scold you. Don't be afraid." He slowly calmed down. And arranged all the papers from the floor. My memory lane was disrupted by a faint sound that travelled into my ears.
*faint sound of someone arguing, comes from outside the kitchen window
I try to stand on tippy toes to look at who's talking outside. Our kitchen window connects to the street behind our house. It's usually empty. A lot of people living on that street are either old or very aristocratic.
My grandma was like that. That's why she bought a house here, or was it my great grandma? I don't know, one of those two. I've seen my grandma at a very young age but I don't remember anything apart from her short blond hair.
I jump. Once. Twice. But the sound's really faint, nothing's clear. The person is either whispering or, really far, but it's an argument I can tell that for sure.
I quit jumping and just stand on my tippy toes and move my head and shoulders forward to listen to the conversation. Faint words fly into my ears. "Minnie.... You..... bing-a-ling...."
"Is she done yet?"
"Hhaaa!" I look back "ohhhh..... god." With a hand clutching onto my chest.
"I'm- oh I'm so so sorry" Steve takes a few steps towards me with hands stretched out to see if I'm fine. "I didn't mean to startle you."
"It's fine." I sigh. "Can I help you?"
"Do you know if your mom's done talking?" He points to the direction outside the window. I look at him to observe carefully what he's trying to say. "I've done all my work and it's getting late. I might not get a bus after 8:30"
"I'm sorry, but I've no idea what you're talking about. Who's she talking to? And where is she?"
"She's right outside" says Steve again pointing outside the window. Oh. Is it mum? Why's she outside?
"Why is she outside?"
"I think she's on a call with someone."
"With Kacy?"
"Well...." He thinks about it, makes a quick decision "yeah. Kacy."
"Are you sure? You sure it wasn't someone else?" I narrow my eyes and slowly walk towards him. "I thought you wanted to take some other name."
"No." His voice comes out all shaky "noo noo I'm sure it was Kacy."
"Yeah it was." Mum barges in all of a sudden "Kacy's backing off from her words. That's pissing me off." She keeps the phone on the table "Steve. Come, tell me what's left."
Steve gives me a shaky, nervous look and walks towards mum. Starts explaining to her all the work. I don't know why, I have a feeling.... Someone's hiding something.
I take the big pack of chips and go upstairs. Maybe I should pay a visit to Steve in a ski mask. He'll surely get nervous and spill out whatever's going on. Maybe I'd even take a knife. Just for safety.
I open the door of my room to find Chloe still sticking to her job. Great. She hears me entering the room and looks up at me, moving her focus from the phone. "When were you gonna tell me that Liam is a possible suspect for what happened to Jasper?"
