One word prompt from solarishashernoseinabook

Her feet pounded on the ground, bits of sticks and hard pebbles sinking into the soles of her foot. Mud splashed onto her skin and dirtying her dress. It was almost funny that it was raining today, of all days. It was like even the skies had known what happened.

Her foot caught on a root. Caitlyn stumbled forward, her chin knocking against the ground, blood already beginning to well. She struggled to stand up, ignoring the pain. The river was just ahead. She had to make it to the river.

Ferris's stricken face flashed in her mind, and she balled her hands into fists. He was lying. A lying coward who couldn't, wouldn't have dared to make that final stroke. Halt was still out there somewhere. She knew it. She just had to find him.

Those awful words still echoed in her head, waiting for her to acknowledge them. She didn't. She refused to accept them. Ferris was known by her and Halt to be a liar. Why would this time be any different? Of all the few times he'd told the truth, this was simply not one of them.

A briar sunk into her foot next, the rest of the plants scraping against her leg, tearing her dress as she ran. The sound of the river was just ahead. Halt was just ahead, and she leaped over the fallen log, her heart in her throat.

But when she reached the river, the rushing water was all that greeted her. Even the woodland creatures were silent, hiding from the rain and hiding from whoever entered their home.

The water was cold. It stung her scratches, soaked the hem of her dress. She couldn't run in this water. It was rough and dangerous, the water splashing against her legs as if to warn her to turn back.

She couldn't cry out, she couldn't scream. She couldn't even say his name. Where was he? Why wasn't he there? He should be there, waiting for her, fussing at her for hurting herself. He should be there to put an arm around her shoulders and tell her it was going to be okay.

But he wasn't.

Caitlyn had run as fast as she could, and it hadn't been fast enough.
