He thought he was doing better. With Maddie there to keep him company and even Halt visiting just a bit more often, he had plenty to look forward to. His closest friends were still around, and even if she wasn't, Jory Ruhl was dead.
He should have been doing better. Revenge couldn't bring back the dead; Will knew that now. Alyss never would have wanted it to happen.
But as he sat there, staring down at the one portrait he'd allowed, tracing one finger along the lines of her cheek, it was like someone had broken a dam somewhere inside him.
He gripped the paper tight, fighting back the lump in his throat. She was dead; he'd come to accept that. There was nothing he could have done to stop it in time, and she had died saving the life of another. Her killer was dead. There was nothing more he could do.
So why did it still...hurt so much?
