Faced to face with your lover's ex, you couldn't help be a bit overwhelmed. On top of everything else going on, meeting Vanessa, Popee's real mother, was surely taking years off your life. Even if she had no ill intentions, this whole situation would be awkward at best. Your inadequate attempt to hide your own displeasure was shown through your surly expression. Still, for politeness's sake, you shook her hand anyway.
"I understand you and Papi are..." Vanessa began.
"Madly in love," you said a bit more aggressively than you intended. Still, you were determined to let this woman know her place.
"He's a good man," Vanessa nodded, avoiding eye contact out of discomfort. "Sorry... this is so much more awkward than I expected it to be."
"I mean, you left the man and your own son. You've been gone for seventeen years to find that they have moved on." Once you were done summarizing, you decided to ask her a secret burning question. "Why did you leave them in the first place?"
"It pained me to leave," Vanessa admitted. "But we had separate dreams. Papi and Popee wanted to be performers and I wanted to be a florist. I had to leave them to start my own florist shop."
"Makes sense," you nodded, admittedly only half listening. This story was not nearly as interesting as you imagined.
"Then I met this other man, who I ended up being romantically involved with for some time. He was alright while it lasted. He was a tennis player who always insisted on having yogurt night."
"Sounds like a real catch," you replied, somewhat sarcastically. "What ultimately put an end to this passionate affair?"
Vanessa smiled and blushed, "I met... someone else."
"That seems to be quite the recurring theme," you muttered under your breath.
"His name is Barry. He is sweet, funny, and I get along with his family and friends. He and the tennis player did NOT get along at all."
"Usually exes don't get along with the people their exes are dating."
"That's a good point," Vanessa smiled, not catching on to the fact you were trying to hint that you weren't looking for a friendship with her. "Another reason they didn't get along was that my ex, the tennis player, was allergic to bees. And Barry was a bee."
"Wait, what?"
"I know," Vanessa chuckled. "It sounds weird, but hear me out..."
"No! What?" you raised your voice. "You left Papi and Popee! Then you pursued a romantic relationship with a fucking insect!"
"And it was fucking romantic!" Vanessa raised her own voice. "I was gonna be polite with you, but you have no idea what the hell you are talking about." Vanessa scoffed. "Knowing Papi, I imagine you've been spending a lot of time in the desert closed off from the rest of the world."
"I mean..." you hated to admit she was right. Still, you had to retort. "You are dating a bee! You left the sexiest man in the world for a fucking bee!"
"Tell me, does Papi like jazz like Barry does?"
"How should I fucking know? I never met Barry!"
"Remember, I dated Papi first, so I know him a little better than you, sweetheart," Vanessa smirked. "And I can tell you that Papi will never get freeform jazz!"
With that, you slapped Vanessa on the face. You weren't sure exactly what the hell she was talking about, but she was insulting Papi. Vanessa began cracking her knuckles.
"Oh, it is ON, you piece of shit!" Vanessa growled.
"Bring it, bitch!" you spat back.
Before you two could break out in a fight, Kedamono's voice brought you both back down to earth, "Guys!"
You both turned to Kedamono. Papi and Popee were standing beside him.
"Please don't fight," cried Kedamono. "It was hard enough to get these two to calm down."
"You two were about to fight?" Popee said. "Shit. Is it wrong I find this kinda hot?"
"Very," answered Papi. "The woman y/n is fighting with is your mother."
"Wait, WHAT?"
"I guess you were too young to remember," Kedamono said. "But Papi isn't lying. This woman is your real mother."
Popee took a deep breath in and exhaled. With an eerily low voice, he asked, "What the hell is she doing here?"
"I heard the news," said Vanessa. "You and your father were about to fight so hard, you were going to destroy the world. In case the world really did end, I wanted to see you one last time." Vanessa smiled warmly. "And seeing as you both calmed down, maybe this doesn't have to be the last time."
"Yeah? And what about what I think?" Popee growled. "You can't just call yourself my mother and expect that to mean anything when you've been gone for all my life. I don't need you in my life!"
Popee stormed off. You called out his name and ran to catch up to him. You followed him into a room that had been considerably less damaged than the rest of the facility. Still, it was fairly broken down.
"Popee," you repeated once you finally caught up. "Look, I don't particularly like this woman either, but I think you should at least hear her out. I mean, she did come all this way. She basically entered a warzone just to talk to you."
"And why should I listen to you?" pouted Popee. "I'm mad at you too, you know. You left me for Papi. You are also cruel." He slouched onto the ground and crossed his arms. He turned his face away from you, but you could swear you saw him tearing up.
You took a deep breath and sat down right next to him. "I know you are mad at me. And you have every right to be. I should have been honest with you from the very beginning about my feelings for Papi. Maybe we could have avoided this whole mess if I had just been honest with you." You took a short pause before returning the subject back to Vanessa. "Anyway, I don't want you to think that you owe your mother anything at this point. She left you. She left Papi. Your anger is more than reasonable. I'd be more concerned if you weren't mad." Even though Popee's wasn't facing you, you could have sworn that you saw that the corners of his lips briefly twitched into a smile. "I simply think that you should give this woman a chance. Not for her sake, but for the sake of your peace of mind. Perhaps you'll finally have some closure with her."
"I will probably regret giving her a chance," muttered Popee.
"Probably," you admitted. "And I have no problem beating her up if she says anything out of line."
This time, Popee laughed. His laughter slowly then converted to sobbing. He finally turned to you and you could see tears streaming down his cheeks. "Y/N," he said. "Why don't you hate me?"
You pulled Popee in for a hug. "I love you, Popee. You're my friend. I know we have always had our ups and downs. I know that we will continue to have our ups and downs. That will never change the fact that we are friends until the end.
Popee sniffed, "The end might come sooner than you think."
"What do you mean?"
"My robot..." Popee looked down in shame. "It was set to explode within a certain amount of time."
"How big will the explosion be?"
"Big enough to wipe out the entire earth, as well as put a dent on Venus."
"Any way to stop it?"
Popee shook his head and began crying again. You held him close.
"Let's get the others. We should at least be together."
