The Heart

After Zelda had spoken her request, she and Link were instantaneously teleported again, this time, landing a few moments before their return to the field.

Although they were now twice as weak and weary, they quickly grabbed the satchel and scurried to hide behind a patch of rocks. Link clutched the satchel tightly to his heaving chest.

"Okay, the moment my past self's powers activate, let the malice loose," Zelda mumbled.

Link tried to weakly nod, but it was clear her message wasn't registering well in his cloudy mind.

"Zelda, I don't think I can see straight..." he mumbled.

The princess's heart dropped a little. As disoriented as she was herself, she quickly realized Link was in no condition to be running about. The satchel he lightly clutched in his hands wouldn't hold the malice that was trying to wriggle free for long.

In a moment of desperation, the princess snatched the bag and pressed it close to her own self, making sure that the covering flap was closed.

"Woah, hey!" Link exclaimed hoarsely, but Zelda had already fixated on her decision. She was going to let the monster free herself when the time came.

As if on cue, once again, her past self and the past version of Link entered the dramatic scene of guardians in the wild grass.

Just like before, they were cornered by one of the machines, and just like before, Link fell to his knees with exhaustion.

"Link, save yourself, go!" Zelda pleaded like before.

Meanwhile, the Link from the present gently placed his hand on his own princess's forearm for a moment. "Wait for it..." he croaked.

The guardian readied its laser, and just like that, the past version of Zelda forced her knight protectively behind her.

Out of nowhere, the malice inside the satchel managed to finally force open the flap and it sprung into the air in a nearly frog-like manner.

The princess's heart couldn't help but drop even further.

Thankfully, her past-self proceeded to leap bravely in front of the weakened knight, and a golden light erupted from the palm of her hand, flashing brightly across the entire field.

The present-day versions of Link and Zelda quickly clamped their eyes shut.

As for the malice who had leapt forth in an effort to stop the guardian itself, it slowly withered away upon touching the light. Its disgusting form melted away into cinders and ash and blew away with the wind.

The guardians in the field ceased their malevolent operations, and they crumbled to the ground; all their lights shut off and stopped flashing.

"Is that..." the past Zelda looked down at the triforce now glowing on the back of her hand.

"The power..."

There was a hard thud behind her.

She whipped around to see her knight, who had just fallen to the ground, laying on his side taking shallow breaths.

"No...Link! Get up!" She cried, hurrying over to him and gently taking him into her arms.

The knight let out a small cough.

"You're going to be just fine..." Zelda told him, her voice quivering.

Link slowly turned his head to look at her, to take in her beauty one last time. He softly admired her messy, yet lovely hair, her muddied fair skin, and her stunning green eyes that brimmed with crystalline tears.
