Zelda sat there for a while, allowing herself to absorb Urbosa's touch. Not just because she was slightly out of breath from hoisting her up, but because she knew this would be the last time, she'd ever be in her arms again.
"Are you alright, young one?" Urbosa finally spoke after a while.
"I am, I'm just...tired, I guess," Zelda giggled sheepishly.
Urbosa pulled away from her.
"What you did just now was very brave, I hope you know," she told her.
Zelda shrugged. "I don't really feel all that brave," she sighed, finally looking up at her.
The gerudo shook her head.
"Nonsense; you were," she replied, locking eyes with her.
There was a moment of silence, and the princess could sense the chief was analyzing every inch of her face. Her brow furrowed.
"You look an awful lot like...my little bird..." she spoke solemnly.
She bit her bottom lip so as to resist the urge to start crying again.
Despite the fact Zelda's face was concealed with the gerudo vai's veil, it wasn't farfetched to assume the chief recognized her eyes. She gently slipped out of their hug.
"Y-your little...what?" Zelda asked, trying to sound confused, which seemed to make the gerudo snap out of her brief daydream.
"Oh, goodness; I'm sorry," she sighed, moving slightly away from her, "it's what I call my friend's daughter."
"I lost her recently. That's who I was upset over. She's not gonna have anyone to care for her now other than her father, but even his gestures of love aren't the softest," she explained, chuckling lightly.
Zelda slowly repositioned herself to sit cross-legged beside her.
"Well...you love her, don't you?" She asked.
Urbosa smiled, wiping more tears out of her eyes.
"With all my heart, and I didn't even give birth to her," she replied.
The princess cleared her throat, trying to subside the swelling of her vocal cords.
"Well," she began softly, "be there for her in a way a real mother would. I'm sure she could learn a lot from a strong and stoic woman like you."
The chief said nothing in reply, but Zelda could tell her message had reached her.
"I think I might just do that," Urbosa said after a few seconds had passed.
"You're so young yet you speak as if you've had years of experience. You're even more composed than me," she laughed.
Sometimes Zelda wondered if the sound of her laughter was sweeter than music itself.
"I guess so," she replied, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
For a moment, no further words passed their lips, and they sat in silence, allowing the only sound around them to be the wind.
Zelda shivered.
"Perhaps you should head back home where it's warm, child," the chief told her, standing up and heading to the opposite edge of the roof where the ladder was.
"I should head back to the palace before they actually send someone after me."
The princess nodded.
"I'll be alright, Lady Urbosa, go on home," she chuckled.
The chief gave her another nod, and she began making her way down the ladder.
After Urbosa had climbed down the ladder, mounted her sand seal, and sped off back to Gerudo Town, Zelda finally turned back to the watch on her wrist.
