"Mummy," Xander called when Clara and I came down to the living room. He dashed straight to Clara without hesitation, and she bent down, embracing him tightly in her arms.
It was clear that he was attached to Clara. Since birth, Clara had been by his side, raising and teaching him. Without Clara, we would never have the family we had now. Having Xander coming into my life was an interruption that I never wanted, but I knew I had to protect him with whatever I had.
He was Clara and my son.
"Hi, baby," Clara smiled and brushed the hair away from his face. "Did you miss Mummy?"
Xander nodded, frowning at her question. "Why did Mummy and Daddy leave me with grandma and grandpa?"
Clara glanced briefly at me, and I ran my tongue along my lips, dumbfounded for an answer. I tucked my hands in my pockets, watching Clara deal with Xander easily.
"It's because Mummy and Daddy were both busy for the past few days," she answered. "We've finished everything though and can spend time with you now. Do you like Mummy staying here with Daddy and you?"
"Really?" Xander instantly questioned, his blue eyes lightening up.
Clara hummed in response and carried him in her arms. "It's going to be Daddy, Mummy and Xander. That's what you want, right?"
He nodded then cheered when he embraced Clara again. She smiled so damn beautifully as if she was a fucking angel from heaven. She glanced at me, and from her eyes, I was already hypnotized by how calming the blue colour was. It lured me in, stole my attention, and had me locked in for the rest of my life.
"It's my favourite breakfast," Clara stated when we arrived to the kitchen. She seated down as I pulled the chair out for her. I headed over to the head of the table to sit down.
The dining table went from being completely empty to the three of us. I recalled the times I sat here alone, isolated from everyone else. Having Clara sitting beside me and our kid with us felt so fucking surreal but satisfying at once.
"It tastes so good," Clara hummed with satisfaction once she ate the pancakes, taking in the strong scent of the maple syrup. "I miss the food here too."
I observed at her beauty. How her lips formed into a perfect smile that stole air away from my lungs. Her brown hair was straightened with the bangs over her forehead. The black dress clung onto each curve of that fucking little body. She raised her head to look at me, confusion across her face, but the innocent expression on her was what I fucking love to death.
"Is there something on my face?" She tilted her head, her fingers touching her face to check if she had anything.
"Can I not look you?" I questioned, cocking my brow.
She let out a small laugh. She placed her hand over mine and smiled over at me. I held her hand tightly and kept the warmth that she had always gave me. I didn't want a single thing to come between us again.
"Of course you can," she answered. "You can look at me forever."
I sharpened my eyes at her to make sure that she wouldn't be joking around with me. She kept her gaze locked to mine, her other hand brushing over Xander's head as our son looked at us. He shared the exact same smile as Clara, and it was starting to be unfair with how he had her traits.
"Talk to Jo later when we visit my parents," I muttered, changing the topic. "She's been too quiet."
"What's going on?" Clara questioned. "I saw her last time, and I noticed that she seemed different, but I hadn't got a chance to ask."
