In any emergency, perhaps the most encouraging phrase that a person could hear is that "help is on the way." Deep down, as people we know that we cannot handle this world alone. These words are so comforting because they mean that someone sees you. They know that you need help, and they are going to come right down beside you in the dirt.
However, unlike waiting for an ambulance in an emergency, the kind of help that I am speaking of takes no time at all to receive. It is instantaneous and always available, just waiting for you to call.
This help comes from Jesus.
And right about now, I am sure, is where many of you readers will roll your eyes and say, "Tell me something that I don't know."
But don't tune out yet. Maybe, like me, you "know" this truth, but you do not fully comprehend it.
The Son of God is willing to help you anytime, anywhere. He is the king of all kings, higher than any official on this earth, yet He is willing to bow down and help each and every one of us.
Sometimes it feels like everything in this world is transactional. People only seem to care about what you can do for them. "I'll help you if you help me," they might say.
Even if it is not outwardly expressed, it is assumed that you have a deal. Think about the most influential, powerful people that you know, like a celebrity or the president. Would they help you? Chances are, they would not. They only help people who mean something to them. They help the wealthy, who can fund them, they help the poor, who will make their resume look good.
Jesus, however, does not want anything in return. I mean, I try to be a good person and all, but if I were the Son of God, who died to save the world, I would probably use that to my advantage at times. "Bring me a cup of water," I might say, "for I am the Daughter of God who saved the world." (This is exactly why I am not Jesus).
But no. Jesus did not use His title to His advantage. Instead of asking us to help Him because of who He is, He brings help to us. Think about the magnitude of that. So today, try to wrap your head around this. Be comforted that the most powerful person ever to live is on your side. He is ready to fight for you, with you.
And finally, as fellow children of God, this says something about how we should live. We are to live humbly, helping anyone that we can. Speaking from personal experience, when I provide help to unsuspecting people, they instantaneously wonder, "What does she want?" Once they learn that I expect nothing in return, the look of confusion on their face is evident. What's gotten into her, they might ask themselves.
And that is exactly the question I want them to ask. I want them to see that I serve someone different, who is not of this earth. Let your actions show the love and joy that you feel. Let them wonder why you do not abide by the transactional rules of the world. Show them that there is a better way of life.
Most of all, never forget that help is on the way.
