Steve Andrews is punctual.
When he entered the living room, afternoon sun rays hit the side of his face. Steve almost looked like a model from a soft drink commercial at the beach in a black T-shirt and cargo shorts.
Harper smiled back and tucked some hair behind her ear while Jenna closed the door, pulled the window in half, and slid the flimsy curtain.
"We'll suffocate in this heat if I close everything," she declared.
"It's fine, auntie," he said, shrugging his black bag pack off his shoulder.
"I took my precautions by waiting for the man living on the right to go inside his house; I then caught him bending down to pick up something from the window, seizing my chance to run across the road."
"I cross my fingers and pray that my son is wrong and nobody would snitch even if they notice you despite all the precautions."
"I guess this would be the moment of truth," Harper revealed, turning their eyes on her, and said, "To figure out who is good and who is a mole."
"When you put it that way."
"I don't recall someone having problems with anybody in this neighborhood; we all know each other, or maybe we don't."
Jenna let out, "Okay, Harper, stop scaring him; I have cleared the kitchen table for both of you, flowers in the vase, and two candles-"
"Mom"
"You like lighting candles when you study." Jenna snitched after everything.
Steve chuckled.
"Oh, you're one of those Pinterest girls; I'm not judging you, and I have my rituals too."
"See, Steve has no problem with it; tell us about your rituals."
"Mom"
"I'm not intervening. Steve doesn't mind."
Of course, mom, when you put someone in a position where they are forced to answer back.
"I don't mind. I will always wear my earphones and listens to something calming instead of the music I often listen to, and there is always a soft drink or juice on the table. It's a bad habit, I acknowledge. I will swap them with tea or coffee one day."
Jenna nodded.
"The day might be here then. Harper has made some cold coffee. I'll show you."
"Mom," Harper hinted once more.
"You don't have to be embarrassed. My mom does not praise me because of my bad habit. I mean soft drinks which are Pepsi, coca cola, that's my one vice-"
