Something is in the air.

They could sense it in their bones yet could not share the notion. It's a pretense to perfection.

Harry stayed in the living room watching television at a low volume. He overlooked the kitchen where Harper and Steve sat, buried in homework without exchanging a word. The sounds emitting were the tips of fingers clacking against the keyboard, shuffling of papers, slurping, and the thump of a glass back on the marble counter.

Awkwardness

Guilt

Fear

What is it, to be precise?

From the corner of her eyes, she caught Steve struggling with a simple Ohm's law question. She touched on part b in the multiple-choice answers. He turned to her. Lowering her gaze back to the question, she gulped.

"As the voltage across a component increase, the current increases too by Ohm's law. It's directly proportional."

"Uh, this one is not about resistant."

Harper re-read the question and fathomed he was correct. It's a semiconductor diode. She touched on part A of the book.

"It's this one, then. As the diode allows current to flow in one specific direction, it's a forward bias, a sharp increase in..."

"Potential difference and current, I get it now, thank you."

"No problem," she muttered.

Harper returned her gaze to her book, last night's fiasco distinct in her mind. She has never discerned a similar fury in her brother before. It's like breaking his trust due to the fame of Harper Brooke's goals: study hard and achieve a good result.

A boy had no place in her life until- her hand touched the spot where he grabbed her arm. She applied a gel later in the night.

Her father saved her by letting out a big burp while descending the stairs. Harry let go of her, and they walked toward him.

"Steve is gone already," Paul asked.

"Yes, Dad, we'll be heading to our rooms now. It's been a hectic day, right Harper."

"I agree. School and tuition are exhausting. I need my bed."

"Well, good night, kids."

"Good night, Dad."

They went to their respective rooms without speaking to each other even the next day. However, Harper is confident he's keeping an eye on them. He's acting like the protective big brother whom she admired. Nevertheless, she has a personal life too.
