How Can You Tell?

Danny's fingers tapping on the keyboard while Luke's body steadied on his laboratory bed. The heart monitor beeped with a pause beat and white liquid flowed through the tube into his skin.

The lair had been quiet after Luke was rescued. It was a nerve-racking hour for him to cleanse injuries he spotted before bandaging up. He avoided trembling hands or passing out throughout the stitching process to save his brother's life. Worse, Max hasn't come out from his room.

Andrea told them to give some time for him to reflect. Kashimi only explained small bits of the recent event. He couldn't bear to show his face to him.

A soft grunt caught him off guard. He craned his neck and Luke's hand was already on his head while the other made a fist.

"You're awake," he walked towards him. Luke lifted his body using his arms but he wobbled.

"Careful," Danny sprinted towards him, his face reflecting worries. "Your chest area was the worst."

The black haired guy looked down, aware enough that his chest was wrapped in white cloth with a red stain on the lower part. Luke opened his mouth but he placed his hand around his neck. Danny grabbed a styrofoam cup filled with water as he handed it to him. Luke tipped it all up. He inhaled the same air before asking his brother. "How long was I out?"

"Under 30 hours, your heart monitor had been showing good progress. However, you can't physically move much. You need lots of rest," he emphasized.

Luke looked up, his eyes were about to fall out.

"I can't rest when there's criminals out there, robbing stores and hurting innocent lives."

"Luke, now it's not the time to deal with it. While we're thinking of our next plan, your chest is taking its damn time to heal," he pressed.

Luke brushed his tongue over his teeth. He knew the worst outcome when someone decided to test Danny's patience. He pushed up his glasses, pondering if he should bring it out.

"Eliana was here fifteen minutes ago."

"Why would she come?"

"She," he glanced around but Luke. It's hard to explain to him since it involved his brother's relationship with the girl he kept tagging himself so poorly.

Danny gazed at the blonde platinum girl who gave no attention to her calculus book that was left open on her lap and focused on the guy with the heart monitor next to him. Her eyes showed endless gray clouds swarming the sky.

"I'm sure he will wake up soon," he reassured.

Her head looked at him, ending the tense silence with a sigh. This was too much of her to take in. She needed to get out of this pit that's suffocating her lungs.

"I'm going home," her hands stuffed the books in her bag and sprinted towards the door. Before she could remind him for the fifth time, he already said her words.

"I will find you if he's awake. Just to make sure you're the first person to know."

Eliana only showed her smile of sadness and mouthed thank you before she's gone in his eyes.

"She had been staying here for two nights in a row. Couldn't leave your side. I'd let her know she could sleep on the couch to make her feel better but she was stubborn as a mule."

He started to worry about Luke's taste in women.

He wanted to snicker. She had enough of him for imagining a girl like her who wanted to face challenges. Male gender had always been a more dominant person than the female but she pushed herself to be a better competitor. But the sudden turn of Eliana being soft towards him was a surprise he didn't expect.
