Chapter Four
Cody’s POV-
I tugged my jacket closer around me as I waited for Claire outside the CD shop. I hope she doesn’t stand me up. There was just something about that girl that made me smile, I just can’t figure out why. I looked up and saw her small figure walking towards me. My heart swelled and my conscience told me to go to her, but pride got the better of me. I didn’t want to seem clingy on the first date. She walked up and smiled shyly. “Hey.”
I smiled, trying my best to hide my giddiness. “Hey.”
We stood there for a second, the awkward silence was growing. “Well, you wanna go and grab some coffee?” I asked.
I sighed as she smiled. “Sure.”
We started walking to the coffee shop, which was about two blocks down .Unconsciously, I grabbed her hand. She jumped. I guess she was startled. Great, not even two minutes into the date and I already screwed it up.
“I’m sorry.” She said, looking down at her shoes.
“Why are you apologizing?” I asked smiling.
“Because I jumped.” She said. “This is the first real date I’ve ever been on.”
Wow. No wonder she was kind of shy and jumpy. “Well, I feel honored.” I smiled, trying to make her laugh. It worked. I grabbed her hand, a little slower this time. “Why don’t we try again?”
She smiled and we began walking again, hand in hand.
Claire’s POV-
Seriously? Why am I such a little wimp. The first time a guy tries to hold my hand and I jump, staring at him like he was some weird creature. Gosh, he probably thinks I’m a freak or something. But he showed no sign of rejection. I told him that this was my first date, like, ever. Then he looked bewildered. After that he took my hand and we walked to the Coffee Shop.
We walked inside, instantly smelling the aroma of freshly made coffee. He must have been able to read my mind. I love coffee. It would probably be considered an addiction.
We walked up to the counter. “What do you want?” He asked, looking down at me with his piercing blue eyes and that adorable cheeky smile.
“Now you’re in trouble.” I said smiling.
He look confused. “Why?”
“I’m addicted to coffee, seriously. I should probably be put on medication for it.” I smiled stupidly.
He laughed. “Well, I guess I made a pretty good decision on for our first date.”
I blushed. “You sure did. “ I murmured. This boy was going to make me look like an idiot. He was just so easy to be around. I was slowly beginning to warm up to him. This was dangerous though. With my reclusive nature, I was scared to hurt him, especially because he was so sweet and caring. But I couldn’t help smiling when he looked at me with those eyes and that smile.
“So, what do you want?” He asked again, laughing.
“Hmmmm,” I pretended to actually wonder what I wanted, even though it was a no brainer. I told him that I wanted a caramel latte. He nodded then told me that I could pick a seat wherever I wanted to. I chose a booth in the back corner of the shop. I didn’t like to sit in the front of any restaurant because then people could just look in and watch you have a conversation with someone. Plus Kayla was probably on the lookout for me and Cody. I didn’t care if she saw us, but I still didn’t want to advertise to much. She’s probably friends with half of the town.
A few minutes later, Cody walked back to our table, setting down two mugs and a plate with a huge cinnamon roll on it.
I looked up and he smiled, handing me a fork. Then he took a huge bite of cinnamon roll. I laughed as he stuffed the pastry in his mouth. After he swallowed, he took a sip of his drink.
“So,” He said. “Tell me about yourself.”
I took a sip of my coffee. My taste buds began to tingle as the sweet yet bitter liquid slid down my throat. “Well, I’m twenty-three.”
He smiled. “Okay, what else?”
I smiled as I took a bite of the cinnamon roll. “Well, I’m addicted to cinnamon rolls like I am coffee.”
“Damn, I’m just on a roll tonight.” He said in a triumphant voice.
I laughed at his remark. “I guess you are.”
“So tell me more.” He said. At this point he had already eaten a third of the cinnamon roll, while I had taken maybe three bites. I hated eating in front of people, but cinnamon was a weakness. Plus he bought it himself, and it would have been rude to not eat any more.
“I don’t really have a lot to tell.” I said, sipping on my drink. “ Ask me questions, then I’ll ask you questions.”
He swallowed another bite of cinnamon roll. “What’s your favorite color?”
Hmmmm, probably purple.” I smiled. “What’s your’s?”
“Hey, hey, hey! I’m the one asking the questions.” He said jokingly.
I laughed.
“It’s orange, by the way.” He said.
For the next hour we talked about everything from the schools we attended to our favorite country. This boy was slowly melting my heart. I skirted around the subject of my parents and other history like that. He didn’t seem to notice. After we left the coffee shop, we exchanged phone numbers and then he hugged me gently, I guess to avoid spooking me again. He gave great hugs. We said our good-byes and then headed for our homes, each thinking about the other with a warm heart.
