"Whoopi!" She yelled as she drove on top speed. The adrenaline rush was pure ecstasy for her. She made sure to park the Audi in a safe spot once she reached the school parking lot. Her school was filled with jokers. There was a time when Misheal, head cheerleader met her new pink BMW covered in stickers of a guy's private part. It was not a fun week for her after that.Casper was pacing at the entrance. "Nat!" He yelled once he spotted her. "Hey! I'm glad you weren't caught". She hugged him. "Me too". They both walked in.
For the first time, the hallways were not crowded with people. "Seems like people stayed home". Natalie shrugged. "Most parents don't want to take the chance in case it's airborne". Casper reasoned. Natalie shrugged again. She knew close to nothing in science.
The bell rang and Natalie went for math. Her eyes widened once she saw the girl at the back seat. She was huge. The girl raised her head as if she felt someone staring at her. "Kyra?" Natalie asked.
She went to the empty seat beside Kyra. "Hey, what happened?" Natalie did not fail to notice the tear stains on her face. "I thought everything was fine", the girl fought a sob, "the deputy who checked me said I was clear. The next thing I know, I'm a giant". "Don't cry. You're not a giant and you look really tough".
Kyra wiped her face, "you really think so?" She asked, "you're not just saying that to make me feel less of a freak?" "You're not a freak. No guy would ever dare to pick on you now", Natalie gave her the most sincere smiles, "I wish I grew like you".
Kyra felt better. She held Natalie's hands to say thanks but noticed something else. Her huge hands were shrinking till it was normal sized. "Would you look at that? You controlled it". Natalie cheered for her. "It's all thanks to you", Kyra smiled, "and you look better without your glasses. Your eyes are sparkly".
Natalie panicked. She touched her face. Truly, she had forgotten to wear them. She was partially blind so she needed them. Her shock became confusion when she realized that she drove on high speed without them and she hadn't tripped on anything. The radioactive chemicals made her sight perfect.
Mr Thorne cleared his throat to indicate that he was present. He did not bother to do his regular row call. They were only eight out of twenty of his students. He went about his teaching like it was a full class.
Natalie was always grateful for Tuesday mornings because she shared English with Casper. "Nat! My girl". He winked at her who just rolled her eyes. "Why aren't you inside flirting with Miss Havin?" Natalie crossed her arms. "She's not here. She got infected and is at the quarantine tent". Casper answered.
"Oh my! That's awful! Do you wonder if she's okay?"
"I doubt it but don't get worked up".
Natalie suddenly remembered a question she wanted to ask him. "By chance, did a deputy with a goatee inspect you?" She asked. "Yeah", Casper nodded, "the dude looked like he saw something but kept quiet anyways. Like he was protecting me. Why'd you ask?"
"I spoke to Kyra who grew ten feet tall in math class and she said the same thing. He was the one who also cleared me. It's strange".
"He definitely knows something that we don't know".
"Then why protect us and let them take Miss Havin? Is she not worth saving?"
"I don't know. We can't also be direct and ask him".
The two sighed. This had been a stressful day so far. Natalie wanted to make sure her dream was lying. Unidentified flying Objects and now, radioactive chemicals could only fill one's life with extraordinary threats. She had read more than enough comics to be educated.
A loud bang was heard from inside the classroom. Natalie and Casper rushed inside. "Whoa!" Escaped from Casper's lips. Before them was a broken table and a not so normal guy with mallet hands. He was sweating and obviously scared.
"We need to help him calm down". Natalie whispered to Casper. "Are you crazy?!" He shrieked, "Perez has the worst temper on the team. He would pound you. Literally!" "He'll raise an alarm and be taken away", Natalie explained, "if more of these displays keep happening in classes, the school is gonna call the cops and that good cop would be punished and the rest of us would spend our lives as guinea pigs".
Casper rolled his eyes. He was not made to be a lab rat. The best friends nodded and walked closer to Perez. Some of the other students thought the two were crazy while the rest were curious to see them get squashed.
"Perez", Natalie called softly, "can you look at me?" Perez obeyed immediately. Natalie wanted to be surprised that he actually listened till Casper whispered, "I forgot to tell you he had a major crush on you". Natalie punched his right arm playfully.
"Can you breathe slowly?" She focused on the raven haired and mercury eyed male. He did as she said. "You have to control this. They're gonna lock all of us away if you don't. Please try". Natalie pleaded. "Really dude, school is our safe space. We can talk about it calmly".
Perez closed his eyes and took deep breaths. By the time he opened them, it was brown. A swirling chocolate brown. The mallets changed to fingers and then went back to normal.
Natalie sighed but she was knew she couldn't do this all day. She pulled out her phone and sent a text blast. Anyone that was cleared by the deputy with a goatee please meet in the gym ASAP. Don't freak out or you'll draw attention to us. That was the message.
Natalie dragged Casper and Perez to the gym. She shot warnings at the other students to make up a very good excuse for the broken chair. Natalie quickly did a round check on all the corners to make sure that no one was watching. She was having this nagging feeling that this was more than a freak accident.
Casper kept pacing. He was making a habit of it. His mind was spiraling. Ever since he woke up the second time, he had been overthinking and over calculating. His head was producing endless possibilities of facts and figures. He wanted to tell Natalie the moment he saw her but he knew she was silently battling her own demons.
Natalie huffed and was about to walked out when the door banged open. "We're sorry", Esperanza from her art class panted, "it was very difficult to get a pass when half the class needs one too". Natalie gave her an understanding nod and they all gathered.
They were more than Natalie imagined. The inspection must have started very early. She recognized a few faces from her classes; Evie, Hazim, Venus, Amethyst, Chamberlain, Maurice and Alexis. "Are you all okay?" She asked. "Except from the fact that we've all be poisoned, I'd say I'm pretty great". Alexis gave his usual sass.
The other students began murmuring about how scared they were. Natalie did not want anyone panicking so she called on Venus. "Venus, you're like the smartest girl I know", she said, "do you have a theory to share?"
Venus stepped forward, "I think I do but it's diabolical", she announced, "radioactivity is clearly radiation but with several rays. Whatever those chemicals were being experimented for must have been really dangerous. The water holds electricity. It's combination must have made some sort of electric charge that was able to reshuffle our systems thus making us metahumans. But like I said something of that scale, at that time cannot be a mere accident".
They all agreed. "If we are puppets we need to figure out who is pulling the strings". Hazim spoke up. "Let's not forget why". Maurice added.
Natalie was about to speak when she heard the sound. It sounded like air being slowly freed from a container. "Everybody! Get down!" She yelled just in time as the grenade exploded.
Whoa! This is getting pretty epic.
What do you think is gonna happen next?
