Light. Very bright, blinding light. That's all I could process at first.
Then the noise. High pitched beeping noises, piercing my eardrums. I could hear voices in the distance, too, but they were all talking at once. The words were jumbled together, and I couldn't make any of them out.
My vision began to clear. I was in some sort of room, in a bed, and the air smelt cleaner than normal. Hospital.
After the thought of a hospital, all the memories came back. My mom screaming. How angry she had been. The fall. The unbearable pain. The darkness.
The noise came back, but this time it was just a single voice. Something, or more like someone, had walked into the room.
Once the figure got closer, I knew for sure it was Zack. He got extremely excited when he saw that I was awake.
"Nessa," he said, coming up to the bed, taking my hand in his. "We were all so worried about you."
I had a million questions to ask. I tried to sit up, and mostly succeeded.
When he noticed I was about to fall over, Zack rushed over and put several pillows behind me to prop me up.
"How long have I been out? Where's Matt? Charlie? Where's Mom?" My voice cracked several times. He interrupted my questions with answers.
"You've been out cold for three days. It's Wednesday, Nessa. Your mom broke your nose. The impact from your fall fractured your skull, which caused your brain to partly shut down...and you've got bruises and scratches all over."
I froze for a second. "Zack, did they think my scars were from this or..?"
He looked at me as if he had completely forgotten about the incident in my room.
"They didn't think anything of it," he finally said.
I sighed a sigh of relief. At least they wouldn't send me to a mental ward. Zack still hadn't answered most of my questions, though.
"Where's my family?" I asked once again. Zack seemed hesitant to answer, as if I wouldn't like what I was about to hear. "Zack," I said sternly, "where is my family?"
He sighed. "Your brothers are with your Dad. And your mom, well, she's in jail."
Dad? Jail? My brain was so overwhelmed, and none of this made sense.
Why would my narcissistic dad come back, even if Mom was in jail? He didn't seem to care that we needed him two years ago, when he packed up and left for another girl.
Apparently she treated him better than Mom did, and he'd leave his own kids for the sake of his own happiness.
Nothing mattered to that asshole. Nothing would ever convince me that he gave a single shit about me and my brothers, especially me.
After I questioned Zack, he said he had to go. He didn't have an excuse this time. Whatever.
I wanted food. Drink. And most of all, I wanted to get out of this uncomfortable hospital bed.
I looked to the left to see a nightstand. There was a remote on it, which had a button to call the nurse. I reached over to get it.
My arm was covered in wires, I had an IV in a vein near my hand. I grabbed the remote and pressed the button.
Almost immediately, a nurse with dark brown eyes and red hair ran in with a huge smile on her face.
"She's awake!" she yelled toward the now open door to my room. I guess Zack hadn't told them the news when he left.
