I stared blankly into space, zoning out. I watched Jordan's mouth move but could hardly hear the words. A feeling similar to the one I'd felt in the attic began to build in my chest, triggering a flare of energy inside of me that vibrated through my body.
This couldn't happen again, I needed air.
I jumped out of my seat, rounding the sofa, running out of the door and into the hallway, looking both ways in search of some kind of escape.
I went left, letting my legs carry me in whichever direction they chose, allowing them to take over whilst my mind fell into chaos.
A grand wooden door, larger than any other in the house, awaited me at the end of the maze of hallways and corridors, freedom at last.
"Wait!" Jordan called, but I was too focused on finally being able to breathe and hopefully putting this nightmare behind me, even just for a minute.
I threw my body into the hard wooden surface, a bruising pain hammering against my shoulder as I did so.
There was no slowing down as the door swung open, I fell down a series of concrete steps before landing face-first on the wet cobblestone.
Heavy raindrops pelted against my back, instantly soaking my clothes as gusts of wind swiped through the air.
Most would find this kind of weather an inconvenience but, this was exactly what I needed, a bitter refreshment. I staggered to my feet, catching a glance of my bloodied arms and knees that I knew would need some attention but right now, nothing could take me from this moment.
I was in what appeared to be a private estate, slightly run-down, but closed off from the outside world nonetheless.
In front of me were two roads, one was made from dirt and stayed within the estate grounds, leading into a small woodland with a large aged barn, whereas the other road was a little more sophisticated.
The newer road had neatly laid cobblestone and to the side of it sat a modern structure with similar architecture to the family home, each level looked like it belonged to a different building. Each floor was also slightly slanted, creating the illusion that the house was lopsided and the climbing plants that scaled the walls callously added to the building's otherworldly appearance.
I looked at the rustic path, running into a wooded area had to be a bad choice, so I took off down the opposite road, my feet hitting the ground in sync with the light thumps of my heart.
I heard Jordan and Rio calling after me, shouting for me to wait instead of calling my name.
My heart skipped a beat as I realised I hadn't told them who I was, but then again, it's not like I had any clue.
I cried out in frustration, I really knew nothing about myself or my past, it was like my mind was a slate wiped clean.
I kept running, everything around me becoming a blur.
Despite the strength of the wind intent on pulling me back, I continued at an inhuman pace.
I found myself sprinting through the tall black gates of 'Truman House' and into a forested area thick and heavy with darkness apart from a few cracks of sunlight that had managed to sneak through the gaps in the trees.
Parted down the centre of the forest was a makeshift road, the rain had caused the dirt to turn into thick mud which caked my legs and feet as I sprinted.
But, taking me by surprise, the lane turned into a steep drop littered with jagged rocks and stones. At the speed I was running, there was no time to acknowledge it.
I flew down the hill, unable to stop the rapid windmill motions of my legs, and for a minute it felt like the world didn't exist. It was an out-of-body experience, I felt like I was flying through a no-gravity zone.
And in these seconds, this moment fueled by adrenaline where I was permitted to care for nothing, I didn't have to worry. I never realised how comforting it felt not to think, not to breathe and not to feel.
It was euphoric and I was free, right until the hill started to curve and my feet could no longer keep up with the rapid speed I'd descended the fall at.
My right foot fumbled and my left foot followed, causing my legs to become a tangled mess as I tumbled into the dirt and rolled ungraciously down the hill.
My head span as I rolled over and over until I finally came to a stop where the land evened out.
I made a small noise resembling that of an abandoned kitten as pain relayed through my body in waves but feeling most intense in my legs and shoulders.
I slowly raised my upper half, feeling a sharp pain in my ribs when I brought myself to sit up. I then felt something warm trickle down my forehead and over my left eye, I followed the trail with my fingers and landed on a deep gash by my hairline.
I hissed in pain, pulling back my hand to reveal my fingertips stained with a shiny yellow substance.
Blood was red, not gold.
What in the world did that scientist do to me?
I groaned in agony as a jolt of pain stabbed at my right leg when I try to move it. Inspecting the limb, I found that it looked somewhat normal, just covered in hideous deep purple bruises that expanded over most of my thigh and calf.
The sound of thunder suddenly bellowed from above and for a second I'd forgotten that it was raining, and studying the sky I could see that it was just getting started.
Storm grey had replaced the white of the clouds and my instincts were telling me that I needed to move.
Slowly, I shifted my legs whilst trying to avoid the unbearable lashes of pain, eventually managing to stand on both feet.
I turned around to look back up at the hill, there was no way in my condition I'd be able to climb back up.
Damn my impulsive decision-making.
