I could hear the boy's footsteps but couldn't see him as he skidded down corridor after corridor, rounding each bend like a race car on a track, I caught glimpses of his hair here and there as I tried my best to keep up with him but he was beyond fast.
"Please wait." I pleaded quietly, however, I had a feeling the kid wasn't about to stop anytime soon.
At this point, I'd run so far into the infirmary I was sure I wouldn't be able to find my way back to the reception, there was no going back now.
I almost tripped over my own feet when I rounded a final corner and saw the kid stop outside of a room deep within the ICU unit, the door was closed and had the number ninety-nine stuck to it.
The boy looked at me and then back at the door like he was hesitating, I hoped my eyes displayed the level of desperation churning in my mind, I was praying he didn't tell whoever was in that room he'd seen a stranger wandering the halls.
As I approached the child with cautious steps, my senses struck me like a lightning bolt, the immediate feeling to duck was undeniable.
I dived for the ground at the final movement, in time to hear something fast-moving whistle past my head.
I looked back in time to see a man bouncing on his heels behind me as though he'd just tried to kick me, the man had dark eyes (almost the colour of coal) which made him look all the more intimidating.
The man withdrew a throwing knife from somewhere in his sleeve before attempting to crush me with his foot, with my reflexes he missed but only slightly.
After rolling to the other end of the corridor, I stumbled to my feet and burst into a sprint with the man hot on my tail.
My heart was racing in my chest, beating rapidly and pumping adrenaline through my veins.
Duck.
My instincts saved my skin once again as I threw my body against the floor, narrowly avoiding the star-shaped throwing knife which embedded itself in the wall at the end of the corridor.
My knees smacked the ground once again, this time I couldn't hold back the pained shout.
I didn't know who this guy was, but it was clear he wouldn't stop until I was dead.
I pulled the energy from the lights in the corridor, dimming the setting and praying it would give me enough time to escape. As I crawled past room ninety-one I felt a strange pull like something urging me to swing open the door to reveal what was inside, but I knew better, I had to prioritise my life.
I tried to be as silent as possible as I hurried down the hall, I didn't want to blow my cover.
As I peered over my shoulder, I couldn't hear nor could I see the man who'd appeared from nowhere and tried to attack me, it was like he too was part of the darkness. The naive part of me hoped he turned back to get reinforcements, giving me time to escape but, I knew this was only wishful thinking, he didn't need back-up.
The man alone looked like he could take on an army, to him I was light work and an easy problem to dispose of, it was a miracle I'd managed to dodge his attacks this long. I knew it was only the crystals keeping me alive, I'm not sure I was this skilled in my past life.
I finally rounded the corner taking me off the previous corridor and onto a new one, the lights were still out and it appeared I'd managed to pull energy from power systems across the infirmary. I only hoped I hadn't affected any of the appliances patients were relying on for support.
I used the wall to help me climb to my feet as I finally released a small sigh of relief, but little did I know it would be a mistake I'd regret.
I managed to avoid the first punch that came my way, the man's fist collided with the wall as he missed, sending brick flying in every direction.
I screamed in terror as I ran for the hospital room closest to me. To my surprise, as soon as I pressed the handle the door opened revealing the blandest room one could find in a ward.
I hastily slipped into the room and tried to slam the door behind me but to my misfortune, the stranger stuck his hand in at the last moment.
I was shocked to find that although the man's hand got crushed and I'd heard the cracks of tiny bones shattering, he seemed unphased as he forced his way in and slid into the room.
With our proximity, I tried the one thing I knew would stop him in his tracks, I grabbed his wrist and directed the energy I'd collected at him.
The trick had worked before but this time, it went horribly wrong, I didn't think it possible for one to redirect the power back at me.
The force of the energy flung me across the room where my head met the floor and my world started spinning. Before I could even react, a hand was around my throat, pulling me from the cold tile floor and lifting me.
I clawed at the stranger's arm in a desperate attempt to escape his grasp, but it was no use, his grip only tightened.
I couldn't breathe.
As my world started to fade, the pale kid appeared, somehow walking through the closed door, reaching for me... and I knew his name.
"August?" I called for him or prayed for him, I wasn't sure but I knew he needed my help and I needed his, but instead, I was here dying.
When I truly thought I was going to die, the man released me and all I could do was gasp for breath as I twitched on the floor because I didn't have the strength to move.
I could only watch as August faded, dissolving right in front of me.
"August," I begged him to stay, I could keep him safe, but it was no use, he was gone.

Who would've thought, it's AUGUST!?
