Having discovered the reality of the situation, my panic attack got worse, the walls rocked instead of trembled and the ground danced instead of vibrating, if I didn't know any better I'd say a sinkhole was forming beneath our feet.
"Pixie, we need to take cover before the roof caves in on us," Neyon said as he tried his best to balance against the wall.
"Under here!" Octavion called out from in the kitchen.
Neyon grabbed Pixie's arm in an attempt to support her and they both fled back into the kitchen.
I took this as my opportunity to find Jordan, I slipped through the door and crept past the kitchen and up the stairs.
En route to my bedroom, I saw no sign of Jordan, even as I peered in through every door, he was nowhere to be seen. The home was large enough to house at least fifteen people, so finding him wouldn't be easy, but I had to tell him what I knew.
I turned on my heels and headed back the way I came but this time I bypassed the steps and walked over to the opposite side of the home. This side seemed darker, the shadows were menacing and the passage lights were so dim that it was almost impossible to see my feet.
As I ventured down the corridor, I saw a flash of red jump out of an open door, bright like that of a siren.
I stilled as another gleam of red hit the wall opposite the door.
There were so many rooms along this corridor but I'd always noted to avoid this one, I'm sure you can already guess who it belonged to.
The flashes of light didn't stop and although my objective was to find Jordan, I had to know what was going on inside, especially after Cynthia had caught me sneaking around. Suddenly the idea of getting one-up on the crippled twin clouded my judgment.
I slowly edged closer to the room, before peering round the corner of the open door.
I squeezed my eyelids shut as a stream of bright red light resembling a laser hit both my eyes and before I could open them again, sharp nails dug into my arm and pulled me forward.
Tripping over my own feet, I fell face-first onto the floor.
"Well, look what we have here," Cynthia said as she kicked the door closed, "I knew you wouldn't be able to help yourself and like a moth drawn to a flame, you walked right into my arms."
I groaned, trying to blink away the red clouding my vision but failed to see anything.
"Poor Ezri," Cynthia mocked, "you and my brother were getting close, but when he finds out you've run away, he'll be heartbroken. But don't worry, I'll make sure he knows how little you meant to him. "
What was Cynthia talking about, Jordan meant so much to me, I wouldn't just disappear and abandon what we'd built. Plus, I had to tell him about the Plague and their plan, he needed to know before it was too late.
As Cynthia's form finally became visible and I could see her hovering above me, was when my I became aware of the dead look in her eyes and the weapon she held in her right hand.
The short metal rod was mostly black but had a red glow at each end, it must've been the source of the light she'd used to temporarily blind me.
"What's going on? Why are you doing this?" I asked.
"You have something I want, something that I need. Because of you, most of my family are dead, killed by the aftershock of the spell that brought you to life. But, if the crystals could save you, then they should be able to save my mother."
"Your mother's dead." I countered.
"Yeah, that's what everyone keeps saying," Cynthia replied, before hitting me across the face with the staff.
In an instant, I was out like a light.
Author's note
I might just try uploading shorter chapters just so I can get the content to you guys, I find the longer chapters so intimidating to edit. Also, I've had so much going on, especially with my family as well as moving houses and it's really stressed me out so I'm finding time for uploading but I'm also taking it easy and putting my mental health first. This doesn't mean that I'm not gonna be uploading, it just means that I'm trying to balance writing alongside other responsibilities while prioritising my happiness. This is all probably tmi, but now you know 😊🌸.
