I knew once he discovered me missing, he'd search every room, broom closet and wardrobe in the house.
As I was about to move from my position, I heard the creak of the kitchen door and staring through the small space I spotted the lady whom I'd named 'the smoker'.
Her appearance certainly matched her voice, she looked near forty with blemished sunburnt skin paired with wrinkles. Her complexion was a light peachy shade of orange and her straight brown hair was flat, lifeless and thin, her body also had an unhealthy crooked look.
Her stature was short and her posture terrible, her back was arched like a candy cane and her neck stuck out and drooped, I can't imagine that hunched position was anything but crippling.
I watched the hunchback lady survey the hallway, I swiftly shifted back into the shadows as she looked my way.
"I wonder what he's got going on, I've never seen him act like that?" I heard Neyon mutter as he joined the woman at the door.
"I know, it's suspicious." The older woman uttered slowly and deep in thought.
"You think he's hiding something?" Neyon pondered.
There was silence for a moment before the woman spoke up.
"Nah, whatever machine he's building is his business. As long as he keeps up with our orders then we don't have a problem. For all we know, the boy's probably trying to build a time machine."
"Maybe," Neyon mumbled, "so are we really gonna do this right under his nose? You think he won't notice?"
"Of course he'll notice, he's the smartest one here, that's why when the time comes we'll have to convince him that we're doing the right thing, using his mother's notes and instructions to turn the Creators into Hybrids is the key to taking over Gloria." The woman stated, releasing a twisted cackle.
"That's great and all but how are we supposed to maintain control, the easiest part is turning the Creators, the instructions we have are more than clear but the notes also suggest that the serum and orbs alter brain chemistry. Maude's observations suggest that the Creators will lose all self-awareness and sanity?" Neyon asked with concern.
So this is what they were planning.
Maybe Jordan wasn't as far gone as the rest of them and would be wholly opposed to this madness.
I guess The Plague's motives weren't as pure as Jordan thought and for that reason, they'd kept him out of the loop, however, I'd just discovered the truth. The question of whether Jordan would believe me circled my mind, clearly he's known the organisation much longer and that alone would cause him to doubt everything I told him regarding his shady criminal friends.
"We'll have control over the beasts for approximately seven days after their creation, so there's no need to worry yourself about the details, every question you have has already been answered."
"Okay, should be simple enough, all we need now is word back from our inside man," Neyon added.
"Didn't I just tell you not to worry?" The lady hissed.
"Sorry Pixie, I was just thinking out loud-"
"You don't get paid to think! Everything is going smoothly and as far as Jordan knows, we're kidnapping the Creators to strong-arm Blaze into signing over the faction to us but I'm sure even you know Blaze would never do any such thing.
I hate that man with a passion but I can't deny his will and resilience. I promise you there'll never be a day when Blaze willingly signs over his home to strangers, especially after the Trumans managed to steal this land right out from underneath his father's nose.
I think we forget that we don't need to own the faction to make it crumble, we simply have to destroy it from the inside out. Once we turn the Creators, Gloria will become a war zone anyway and the natives will flee to neighbouring factions, tell me that doesn't sound like the start of a revolution.
I almost choked, everything about The Plague was completely twisted and it was clear that Jordan had no clue what he'd gotten himself into, he was part of something so sinister that I feared if he knew The Plague's real intentions, his shame and guilt would eat him alive.
But before this plan really did fall into action, I had to tell him what I'd heard, even if it risked the one friendship I cherished the most.
