She's got to be asleep

Jordan

I was losing my fucking mind, I couldn't find Ezri anywhere and I'd been searching for hours. The members of the Plague had come and gone, not that I'd paid them much attention, I couldn't find one of the three people that I'd promised to protect with my life.

Cynthia wasn't in her bedroom either, which wasn't wholly unusual but I could feel it in my bones that something was wrong.

I'd woken Rio to help, and we'd split up to cover more ground, but even together, we hadn't found any trace of Ezri or Cynthia.

We'd agreed to meet up in the second-floor bathroom once we'd finished our search. The pearlescent tiles on the walls began to reflect soft rays of light as the sun began to rise and shed light upon the family estate.

"They could be together," Rio suggested from her seat on the side of the large regal bathtub, big enough for three people, whilst her head rested against the curved side of the oval-shaped sink.

I shook my head, the two of them weren't close enough to disappear together, they hardly spoke.

Bang, a sound akin to an explosion echoed through the house and the ground shook with an almighty roar like thunder had erupted from the planet's core. I quickly approached the bathroom window and peered out, somehow flames were erupting from the East building. (The one that housed my mother's lab underneath it.)

I took a deep, shaky breath.

This morning was starting to remind me of the day when my father brought Ezri back, accidentally taking his own life as well as many others in the process, most of whom were part of the family.

The lab was one of the places I hadn't bothered to check, I hadn't expected Ezri to go down there, as far as I knew, no one had told her of its existence.

My feet moved before my mind could process what I was doing.

"Stay here," I told Rio as I started sprinting through the house.

Another deafening bang rang through the property as I raced down series of stairs and through corridors before bursting out of the front doors.

During my sprint towards my mother's abandoned lab, flames erupted from the right side of the East building, shattering glass and sending brick flying.

As soon as I reached the back entrance, I noticed that the hatch was already wide open.

Fuck, this couldn't be good.

"Ezri!" I jumped through the entrance and hurried through the hallway. "Ezri, you in here?!"

The heat down here was stifling, drying out my eyes and stealing my breath as I ventured deeper into the cursed place.

"Cynthia!"

I pushed open a set of heavy steel doors, the metal burning my palms as I did before I found myself in the lab itself.

There were flames crawling up all the walls and chewing through my mother's equipment.

Before my eyes could further examine the irreparable damage the fire was causing, my eyes fell upon a figure splayed out on the floor.

My heart skipped a beat.

"Cynthia." I wasted no time approaching her and falling to my knees, my voice a soft whisper.

"Cyn? Cyn?" I rolled my sister over and placed her head in my lap.

Her brown eyes were open and a small stream of blood trickled out of her mouth as though she were... dead.
