- "a bond between souls is ancient - older than the planet"
Faith was left speechless. Her mind was running with a series of thoughts, she didn't know what to think never mind what to say.
Her hands that were on his shoulders tensed pushing him back from her and she took a few steps back from him. The frown that formed on his face was evident at her action. She couldn't comfort him when she herself didn't know how she felt. The reality of the situation they were in hit her full force.
Everything was a mess.
And yet, there was only one thing she had to ask. Her mouth opened yet no words came out. Patiently he waited for what she was about to say.
Closing her eyes she tried again.
'James' with an intake of breath, 'what is a mate?' she asked.
He just stood there lost for words. He looked at her face wondering if she knew.
His mouth opened then closed again, and after a minute he decided to answer her no matter the cost it would have on the relationship they were trying to built. She deserved to know the truth that everyone was hiding from her. Even though the way he imagined telling her was completely different, this had to do.
'Where did you hear that?' he asked her back his face unreadable, he took slow steps until he was a breath away from her. Her eyes were impassive, there was a look he couldn't decipher.
'Τhat girl had said that she could have been your mate, that I'm in the way like I should stay away from you'. Then she did just that and took a step away further from him. She turned her gaze to the window.
Her gaze remaining there, 'like it was wrong to be with me' she stated.
His reaction shocked her, she was looking at him hard. 'I can't believe you. Why are you laughing? I'm serious I want an answer!' she demanded and he just kept laughing his ass off.
After he saw her hurt face he tried to stop himself and took her hand in his. 'Tell me!' she repeated and withdrew it from his hold.
And he smiled at her, she was so cute when she was upset 'you know I'm different' he took her hand in his again, stroking it tenderly 'a mate is someone special' he stopped thinking how to word it. 'We believe that a goddess who lives at the moon gifted this person to us and that one day we will find them. Do you remember the tale I told you that day?' she nodded, the story about the moon goddess and the wolf.
He never finished the story.
His whole frame turned to the window staring up at the moon.
'After the other gods turned the wolf to half man his soul was split into two, that is why he couldn't remember his love for the goddess when he was man. The other half of the wolf's soul belonged to the goddess herself, it was a beautiful thing to completely have the soul of the one you love and it was a soul she savoured. They shared a bond so deep that no one could measure up to and she decided that she would grand this blessing to her children.
The birth of the mates is an old tale and we still believe it. That there is someone out there just for you who has half your soul and you are bound to meet one day, a half animal half human. That is how people my kind find their life partner, we don't just fall in love' his gaze now on her.
Her eyes displayed the devastation she was feeling, he could never be hers and one day this person will show up, his mate.
'So you can never be with another person except you mate?' was her question as her heart dropped.
'You can but it's not the same, what you feel could never compare to being with the one destined for you. This bond the mates share is a bit like love at first sight, only this person is made just for you.
Mates are perfect for each other', he concluded.
She was at a loss of words for awhile then went and sat down on the bed looking at her lap thinking. There was only one final question 'did you find your mate?' she lifted her head waiting for his answer.
He was staring right at her. 'Yes' he only said and her eyes snapped at his.
'Oh' she said quietly. Then she mustered up all her pride and decided to push her feelings aside 'she is a lucky girl' she whispered. So this is it for them, she thought, they could never be anything more no matter how much she wished so.
He looked at her for a while not sure what she was thinking and then realised she didn't get it.
'She is the most beautiful girl I have ever laid eyes on', her face turned away tears brimming in her eyes.
He didn't have to say anything more, she got it she could never be that for him end of story.
She wanted to get out of there as soon as possible she couldn't look at him any longer, it hurt too much.
Was this what a break up felt like, she wondered inside her head. He belonged to someone else and she just had to walk away. As she was about to open her door to leave he grabbed her wrist stopping her.
'Faith, you are my mate'.
