Mei turned her back to the castle, facing the infinite darkness that engulfed the forest that her and Kagura just walked through. Has it always been this dark? Did it always feel this vast?
She wondered, just how oblivious her past was to her ever since being accompanied day in and out for hours on end? For so long she was used to going about her way alone but staring at the forest made her wonder, how long did it take for her to adjust to a loneliness she knew would never be filled until now.
And most importantly, how soon would it be that she would succumb to it yet again?
It sent a shiver up her spine, one that continued to rise and fall according to its own circadian.
Pivoting on her heel, she gripped her towel closer to her chest, looking further and further down the depths of the castle ahead of her. She could hear Kagura's scolding voice linger in the back of her head, warning her to never venture into the castle without Naraku or her accompanying her. But she thought to hell with it.
I want to see Naraku. I miss him and I- I just want to see if he's okay.
She looked up to the sky, inhaling the fickle breeze that circled around her. With her eyebrows scrunched together in determination, she finally picked up his scent.
It was as if her feet moved on its on towards the connecting bridge in the back garden. She never once stepped back there, but its view was breathtaking like it was the thousandth time. Multitudes of lilies, chrysanthemums, spider lilies, and roses bloomed in different sections of the garden. She could see a multitude of Koi fish gather in schools, swimming up and down the man-made river at rapid speeds that her eyes couldn't catch up with.
She tried to take in the sights in front of her, but her mind was still focused on Naraku. She would worry about Kagura later, all she wanted was to see his face. The closer she got to him based off his scent, she could feel his anguish. The spider mark on her back began to thrown but she chose to ignore it.
Her footsteps quickened across the bridge, down the courtyard, across another bridge, and through a secluded pagoda that was precisely maintained. One would think someone sat there as recently as yesterday.
She stood in front of a separated guest house from the manor. The air was stiff and all sounds surrounding her hushed to a muffled whisper. Her heartrate quickened in her ears, to the point she clicked her tongue to attempt a temporary silence, but it was no use.
Reaching for the sliding door, she dropped her towel from those same hands, leaving them at her feet as she stepped inside. The air was pungent with a potent purple mist but it didn't stop her for a second.
When the miasma dissipated around her, she spotted Naraku sitting in the middle of the room. His eyes were closed and expression still, as if he were in a deep slumber. She took in the foaming green structures surrounding his arm, but it didn't stop her steps.
She proceeded forward, eyes squinted and tongue stuck to the roof of her mouth. When she was close enough, she sat on her knees and reached her hands forward to cradle his face in hers.
It was if her heart couldn't wait for her body to move, so it decided to take over. She planted her lips on his, an overwhelming sense of relief and sadness washing over her as each second passed by.
Naraku's eyebrow twitched as he awoken from his slumber to find Mei in his presence. For the quickest of moments, he was furious with Kagura for being so careless to let her see him this way. But then, a softer feeling overcame him. He couldn't explain it into words, but instead returned her kiss, his tongue faintly tasting the salty elixer that escaped her crimson eyes.
Oh, Mei, I've missed you.
