There was a mist floating around the ground where Mei imagined to be standing. She focused her vision on the villagers passing by around her, all shadows of different shapes and forms.

where was she?

she tried to cry out, say a word, and nothing. she looked about to see a shadow of a large man and an average height woman sitting under the tree. when she focused, she saw her father and a younger, more childlike appearing mei.

"Mei, i want you to have this sword when I'm gone, and i want you to protect it from all of those who seek to harm you and those around you."

Mei's father, Jun, sat cross - legged under a large oak tree with his dark black hair comfortably resting on one shoulder, his royal blue warrior's kimono freshly sewn but he draped his jacket over Mei to keep her warm.

Mei, younger in this vision, had her hair in low ponytails and her large, almond shaped eyes looked that of a doe as she looked at the large sword in amazement and curiosity at the same time. Her kimono was also blue, but decorated with soft pink cherry blossoms and gold trimming along the hems.

"Papa, what is so special about this sword?" Mei tried to unsheathe the blade, but her father sucked his teeth and tapped her hand.

"It's protected me, it's protected your mother as best as it could," Jun said with a hint of sadness in his voice. "And it will protect you, from whomever will cross your path. You see this," Jun pointed at the glimmering purple gem that was embedded in the groove, and with wonder Mei gazed at the stone as its purple hue contrasted the hue of her red eyes under the sun. "An old friend and blacksmith of mine came across this stone and swore it to have good luck, i have not lost a single battle with this sword. And i want to give it to you, my little Mei."

Mei puffed her cheeks and blushed as her father patted her head and just looked away "what if i don't want to battle, what if i want to get married and have kids like mom?"

Jun nervously rubbed the back of his head and chuckled "well, it'll be a cold day in the underworld that a husband is able to handle a demon like you."

Jun's laughter seemed deep and distant every growing second until the mist cleared and all that was left was darkness.

Then, another scene unfolded before Mei's eyes.

It was an older Mei, crying over the still body of her father, blood spewing down his neck and onto her arms.

"Mei," Jun whispered weakly, his hand gently holding onto hers as she looked down with soft yet somber eyes "mei, no need to cry. I am at peace, i just want you to take this," Jun winced in pain as he reached around his hilt, dropping it out of his hand before even reaching Mei's. "Take this, and protect it. Protect it with everything that you have, even if you choose not to live the life of a warrior, keep this sword close to you. I'm not," he coughed a few times, wiping his mouth of the blood seeping out the corner "I'm not sure on the meaning of this stone, but demons are after it, and you must keep it in good hands. Don't let," cough "don't let it fall into the wrong hands, Mei."

Mei said nothing but nod, tears streaming down her cheeks, reddening as it dropped down to Jun's as it cleaned her face of his blood.

"I love you, my little Mei. Being your father has been the best thing to happen to this old demon. And i.... and i...." Jun took another cough, this time leading to a hoarse groan "I am just so happy, me and your mother, created such a beautiful human being..." Jun gazed up at Mei with a smile, his hand still gripping her fingers as the life slowly drained from his eyes.

"no...." mei sobbed "papa!!" she shook his hand a few times before placing her hand on his chest in tears, and this image dissipated before mei's perspective.
