I was busy at work when I got a call.
"Nat?" I asked, "what's wrong?"
"Y/N where are you?" Nat questioned, hushed.
"I'm at work," I frowned, "what's going on?"
"Y/N," she sighed, "Will and Jay's dad's apartment building was on fire and he suffered some smoke inhalation so he had to be brought to the ED."
"What?" I gasped, "Oh my God! Why didn't he tell me?"
"Pat's going to be fine mostly," Natalie continued, "but I think you should be here."
"I'm on my way," I informed her.
I told my assistant to cancel the rest of my meetings and made my way to Gaffney Chicago Medical Centre. I called my dad on the way to tell him what happened and he understood and told me to leave. I made my way to the waiting room where Jay was standing. He seemed surprised to see me.
"Y/N?" he asked, "I thought you were at work."
I frowned at him, "Natalie called, said your dad was brought in."
"Yeah," he sighed and took a seat.
I sat down beside him and placed a hand on his shoulder which he grabbed and squeezed. He then leaned on my shoulder as I wrapped my arm around him and ran my fingers through his hair to soothe him.
"Hey Y/N," Will greeted.
I waved toward him. He had dark circles under his eyes and seemed worn out. I couldn't imagine what they both were going through. I know that had it been me, I would be unable to function. Finally, my brother returned and said that they could see him. Jay stood up, my hand clasped firmly in his and we made our way there.
I stood outside the door wanting to give them a minute alone with their father. I discussed some of the wedding plans with Natalie and chatted with April and Maggie for a bit. Then, I heard Jay and Will shouting before Jay stormed off and Will went somewhere else. I was about to follow them when a voice stopped me.
"Let them cool off dear, they have always been hotheaded," Pat's voice said weakly.
"How are you feeling Mr Halstead?" I asked him politely.
"Please call me Pat. I'm a little in pain but otherwise fine," he coughed a little, "it's good to see you."
"You as well," I entered the room and took a seat beside him.
He grabbed my hand and I let him, "I don't think that I've ever seen Jay as happy as when he is with you."
"That's sweet," I blushed, "he cares for you too. He wants to make you proud despite the difficulties between you two."
"I'm extremely proud of the both of them," he smiled with a faraway look in his eye, "I just never said anything because I wanted to push them to be the best possible versions of themselves. I've always wanted to say something but I'm afraid that it's too late."
"It's never too late, to tell the truth," I replied, "trust me they would love nothing more than to know that you love them and are proud of them."
"You remind me of their mother," he smiled, "I'm glad that Jay has such a wonderful woman in his life."
His eyes fluttered shut and I called his name a couple of times but he never said anything. His heart rate sped up drastically on the monitor. I pressed the alarm button and April and Will came back in running.
"What happened?" Will frantically asked me.
"We were talking and he just shut his eyes and was not responding," I explained, "then his heart rate sped up."
As if on cue, we heard the flatline of the monitors and I rushed outside as Will tried to revive his father. Jay was standing behind me and I could see his eyes fill with tears. It took an entire five minutes before Pat's steady heartbeat was heard.
"So he's brain dead?" I asked Will outside as I watched Jay sit with his father.
"Yeah," Will sighed, "Jay refused to believe me and he wants to keep him on the ventilators. I owe him this much."
"It's not your fault," I whispered, "I'm sure you did everything you could. This is not the right time but let me know if you need any help with the funeral arrangements."
He shook his head and I entered the room where Jay was watching his father intently.
He sighed, "Will not now," he turned, "oh, sorry. I thought you were Will."
"No problem," I waved him off and sat beside him, "how are you doing?"
"He's alive," he looked at me with a hint of desperation in his eyes, "I know they say that it's nothing, but I can feel it. You probably think I'm crazy huh?"
"Not at all," I responded, "I'd be the same way if he were my father. No matter how precarious our relationship is, I would never wish death on anyone."
"That's because you have the purest soul I've ever seen," he scoffed.
We sat in silence for a few moments before I spoke up, "I was talking with your father before...everything."
"What did he say?" Jaya questioned.
"General stuff," I shrugged, "most importantly, he told me that he was proud of you and Will."
Jay let out. self-deprecating chuckle, "that's funny."
"I wasn't joking," I looked at him, "he really does love you and is proud of you. He always wanted to tell you but feared that your relationship was far too damaged."
"He's gone, isn't he?" he choked before he cried into my shoulder.
Twenty minutes later, they brought him off the ventilator. We all hoped for some kind of miracle but knew that there was none to come. He passed away peacefully. The next day, we arranged a funeral and held a small gathering afterwards. Jay was hurt by the whole thing but promised to tell me if something was wrong. He even set up appointments with his therapist which showed just how far he had come.
He regretted the way he left things with his father but I made sure that he knew that he wasn't alone. I made sure that he knew that he was loved.
"Thank you," he told me when we went to bed one night, "for everything."
I cupped his cheek gently, "you don't have to thank me. I'm here for you no matter what. I love you so much."
"I love you too," he smiled at me, "I want to spend the rest of my life with you."
He kissed me passionately and things only got more heated from there. Safe to say, we were not going to get any sleep.
