Chapter 14 - The Announcement

The two sisters kept looking at the men on the horseback.They looked simple but gave out an aura of importance.
When the horses had settled in the middle of the path with people surrounding them from everywhere, the one in the lead was scanning the situation.
Feeling the questioning eyes of the people, he decided to introduce himself.

" Greetings to everyone. I am Mr. Julius Adams, a loyal servant of this land. I am the head of the internal affairs department. Today , i come here to announce a matter of utmost importance."
He ended with a bow. The cluelessness in people's eyes was even more evident now.

" Dear citizens, i am aware of the various questions in your mind. But all of your questions will be answered through the announcement."
He said with a sad smile.

After glancing for a second at the balcony of the town hall, he signalled the soldier behind him. The soldier quickly handed him a scroll.
As soon as the scroll was handed, the other two soldiers banged the drums three times.

The atmosphere was suddenly very tense. All eyes were fixed on Mr.Adams. What questions? What answers? What was with the heavy atmosphere?
Meanwhile Maya and Bella who were here for their work found themselves in an awkward position. They came here for inviting a relative for a happy occasion and are now stuck in between a serious matter. They felt out of place.

Mr Adams had opened the scroll by now. He took a deep breath and started reading the scroll.

" Men and women of the Demon kingdom, This is to announce that , on beloved king , Royal Majesty....His Highness King Driman ......has departed from the world"

As soon as he finished his sentence, gasps and murmurs could be heard from the crowd. August carefully observed the townspeople.
Everyone had a sad face as expected. He couldn't help but be nervous. Soon , sobs and cries could be heard.

However Mr Adams continued.

" After the sad demise of the king, there would be no one to look after the kingdom. In these difficult situations, without a leader, we are very vulnerable.
Hence, the first son of The Late Royal Highness- Prince August would be crowned the king. The coronation ceremony would take place the day after tomorrow. With his coronation, we expect you to co-operate with the new king and give him blessings.
We hope that with the new king , our kingdom will only experience happiness, contentment, love and peace."

     Saying such , Mr.Adams closed the scroll. He glanced at the anxious look of the Prince and without wasting any more time, made his way out of the busy streets.
     Maya and Bella were rooted to the spot. They couldn't believe their ears but now when they started to accept the situation itself, they  were clueless about the details. It was indeed sad.

      They had never been in the presence of the king or met him but they do remember the times that their parents talked about the virtues of their leader. They had told them about how the King Driman had changed the worldview of Demons.
      How much of a good person he was and how excellently he would handle his role as a king. He was an  inspiration , someone to look up to.

       Maya and Bella were startled as an old lady besides them almost lost consciousness but they held her in time.
       Besides her they could hear a few muffled sobs and cries. The depressive mood spread over the whole crowd and there were long , sad faces everywhere.

      As both the sisters were returning to their path on their uncle's home.
Maya's mind was occupied by something else.

     " Bella!"
 
     " Yeah?"
    
     " Sis, i don't understand something. Aren't we immortals?"

     " Yeah but-"

     " So how can death come to an immortal? "

     " No , Maya , in literal sense- we're NOT immortals ."

     Maya as stunned. Too stunned to speak.

    Bella took a look at her sister's expression and realised.

     " Oh that's right, no one's ever told you before right?
      Apparently because of some reason which i don't know , our infinite lifetime was taken back .
Now also we are immortals but only due to our race. Which means we live just a few years more than a 100 year old human.
    It's just that people don't die as early as King Driman did because of his illness. Death will eventually embrace all. Why else do you think humans would have the confidence to be on our opposite side? "

      Maya had actually heard something similar in childhood. But on inquiry, her mother had blown off her suspicion saying she doesn't need to know the matters of grownups.
      Ha! To think that such an important piece of information was hidden from her all these 21 years.
Bella was only 4 years older than her yet she knew?

     * Sigh*
  
      Could this day get any worse?
