Y/n knew what she was about to do.
She was aware. Aware of consequences, aware of everything, but nothing had changed her mind.
She'd been looking for a chance to hurt John for a long time, and Yelena could vouch for that. Y/n now had a motive, a reason to hurt him. Beforehand, he was just an asshole with a big mouth and questionable views. Now he was a murderer.
He killed that man in cold blood. Right out in the open for the entire world to see. With the shield.
The shield that was supposed to stand for freedom, protection, and so much more. Captain America was supposed to be a figure that people felt safe around. Y/n was far from being a patriot of the country, but she would defend that shield to the ends of the earth. That shield stood for things. It was precious.
Blood had never been on that shield before. Never. Not even Steve's. And there it was, tarnished beyond belief. John didn't deserve that shield. There was only one person that did, and y/n was going to hand it back to its rightful owner. Sam.

The calmness that had spread throughout y/n's body was eerie.
She was completely relaxed. The anger inside her definitely hadn't faded, but she wasn't in a rush. She wasn't chasing after him screaming, she wasn't yelling at him, she wasn't doing anything like that. Y/n was simply strolling after him. Not close enough for John to notice, but enough for y/n to be able to trail his every movement. She didn't need to chase him down. He was predictable. It was going to be an easy fight, and y/n was going to savour every second of it.
As John raced away in his state of shock, y/n swiped a pair of wireless headphones from a child. She didn't even seem to react when the child yelled out in protest, simply picking up the kid's phone and tucking it into her pocket so that she could adjust the music if she wanted. "Swapsies." Y/n smiled, handing the kid one of the many Wakandan bracelets wrapped around her wrist. It was a terrible trade, but y/n was going to give everything back once she was done with John.
She slipped the headphones on, a small smile appearing on her face as the music flooded her ears. Typical pop music, but that didn't matter. Y/n just wanted a backing track for beating the daylights out of John. She didn't need her hearing when it came to this guy. Yes, he was a super soldier, but there was proof of that not being a struggle for y/n in the past.
*****
John felt as if he couldn't breathe.
He didn't know what to do, he didn't know what to say, he just knew that he had to get away. That was exactly what he did. As soon as he came to his senses after his blind rage, he just ran. He ran and refused to stop until he could find a place to hide away.
That man killed Lamar. That was what John told himself. It was simply revenge and justice against a threat to the country. That was all it was.
