Most people hated thunder storms, they were dangerous, loud, and they kept you inside. Skylar Haul was not one of these people. Instead of despising the incessant pounding drum of rain on the roof, she longed for it.
The sounds that easily lulled her in to a deep sleep, the feeling of the fresh rain pouring down on her skin, the dark grey clouds that covered the sky like a warm blanket, she loved it all. Although she would admit that storms, like anything that's beautiful, were extremely destructive and dangerous, she didn't see a problem with that. Everything has its dark side and somehow, the hazardous side of storms only made them more intriguing to her.
Maybe that's why it had become her routine to lay outside in the rain each time it poured, which, luckily for her, was very often in the Netherlands.
Here she lay again, flat on her back, looking up at the sky as the rain soaked through her clothes. The cold air sent chills throughout her body, the ice cold water sending a shiver down her spine, but truthfully, she didn't care. She had been lying for hours as the storm fluctuated, barely moving a muscle. The calm allowed her to think, to wonder, to dream, to hope. If it was her decision she would be here all day, but alas, that was not the case.
Soft footsteps approached her, squishing through the slick mud each time a foot was placed. She could tell those footsteps apart from any other, even with the droplets pouring onto her skin. After all, they belonged to her favorite person in the world.
"Mom wants you to come back inside," The small boy said as he approached his sister, his somewhat tattered umbrella blocking both himself and his sisters head from the rain. "She says it's not safe out here"
"Just a few more minutes," Skylar replied, swatting away the umbrella in her brothers hands.
"Why do you stay out here anyway?" The boy questioned looking down at his sisters longing gaze.
"Here, I'll show you," She patted the spot of wet grass next to her, gesturing for him to lie down. The boy hesitantly sat down before lowering the rest of his body to the soaked soil.
"Cole you can put the umbrella away, the rain won't bite you, and if it does, I'm right here," Skylar grabbed Cole's hand as he closed the umbrella, flinching as the first few drops fell on his face.
"Still don't understand why y-"
"Shh" Skylar calmly cut him off "What do you see?"
"The sky" he replied, glancing over to his sister with a confused glance. Skylar knew he was watching her but didn't look back.
"What else?"
"Ummm...." The boy hesitated, not sure what response she was looking for.
"The clouds, the rain, you." He responded, still wondering what this had to do with his original question.
"Ok. Now close your eyes, how do you feel?"
"Cold, wet, tired"
Skylar chuckled with Cole soon joining in "I meant more like emotions but whatever" she joked.
"Cole you asked me why I stay out here?" She questioned, turning her head to the side to look at Cole.
"Yeah..." He trailed off, confused as to where she was going with this.
She turned her head back to look up at the sky once more.
"I stay out here because I look up at the sky and I feel... something. I close my eyes and I'm nothing and everything at once. My mind is everywhere yet my body stays still. It's as if I'm playing on a playground made from the constellations, I'm dancing in the rain and I never run out of breath, I'm hopping between the raindrops as they fall, climbing closer to the moon" with that comment she points to the dim light the moon casts through the dark grey clouds.
