Skylars eyes snapped open as she suddenly became aware of her surroundings. Pushing her self up and off of the ground, she felt her hand clench around a pile of ash. The memories started flooding back.
The words "Cole look out" ripping themselves from her throat, the blow to the head caused by the trunk, the intense heat from the fire as she and the log went up in flames.
Surely she was dead. Surely there's no way she could have survived that. Surely she was in some sort of limbo that resembled the setting of her death. Surely.
Yet no matter how hard she tried to convince herself of this, a nagging question continued to sound in the back of her head.
'If this is my memory, why has the tree turned to ash?'
As Skylar looked around, attempting to find solid evidence that she was in fact dead, her gaze landed on the moon which seemed to glow brighter. Suddenly, all of her nagging thoughts disappeared as she gazed upon its face.
'Skylar Storm'
The moon spoke in a silent whisper. Quiet as the constant swirl of the wind, yet never to be missed. Skylar didn't know how the name had appeared in her mind, her ears registered nothing, and her eyes saw no words, but there it was.
Confused, she looked back up at the moon for an answer, but the moon had shrunk back down, no longer illuminating the night sky. The thoughts consumed her once again, the moon had raised far more questions than it had answered and as her questions grew rapidly, so did her rage
How dare he leave her alone with nothing but a name. How dare he leave before answering her questions.
How. Dare. He.She was taken aback as she heard sparks of electricity. Frantically, she looked around, attempting to find the origin of the nose only to see her balled up fists surrounded by small jolts of lightning.
She opened her hand, inspecting the flickers of electricity her palm was emitting. As she turned it around sharply, a bolt from her ring finger struck a nearby branch, darkening the bark on the spot of impact. She jumped in shock of what she had done before continuing curiously. She tried again, throwing out her open hand quickly and imagining a bolt striking another branch on the same tree. It worked.
All of her previous rage had dissipated as she ran around through the forest, playing with her newfound power. Jumping around and shooting imaginary targets on trees. Along with her bolts she discovered other abilities. If she held a bolt in a place and made the motion of pulling herself towards it, she could zip to the place of impact at the speed of light. Curiosity got the best of Skylar as she tried it, pointed towards the sky. She zipped above the clouds, although, instead of falling like she was expecting to do, she was able to float on it.
Skylar laughed in delight as she zipped around above the dark clouds, walking among what she had looked up to for so long. Zipping once more she found herself on a lighter colored and more sparse cloud, it was much harder to walk on and she quickly lost her balance.
She screamed out in terror as she started to free fall, clamping her eyes shut. In a last ditch effort to save herself from this untimely end to her second life, she aimed down and attempted to zip once more.
The solid ground appeared under Skylar in a soft landing. Carefully opening her eyes, the recognizable houses that lined the town square of her village came into view. Skylar celebrated internally at finally knowing where she was before setting off to locate the most important person in the world. Her search for her little brother didn't take long. There he was, she spotted him walking back to the family's house.
His short, dark brown, hair had lost the bounce it usually had as he made his way up the path, adjusting his vest as he did so. .Skylar ran up to him, reaching out to give him a big hug when she noticed the empty look present on his face. Her 11 year old brother looked drained. Small eyebags had formed underneath brown eyes, puffy from tears. He didn't wear his usual smile, instead an indifferent look had taken up the space below his nose (which also look slightly red). Skylar reached out her hand to place on his shoulder in an attempt to comfort him but instead of her hand being somewhat supported it fell right through. She quickly pulled her hand back, startled by the cold and empty feeling that had briefly filled it. She looked backstage her brother in confusion only to feel him walk right through her as if she wasn't there.
Her brother couldn't see her.
She was invisible to him.
She was invisible to-
The sky split open as rain began to pour although Skylar payed no attention to this, instead she ran. As the thunder boomed she ran as fast as she could, and as lightning bolts struck around her she continued to run. Her eyes stared to blur as she leaped to a spot where a lightning bolt was about to strike, but instead of striking through her she climbed it. She ran up the bolt and as it dissolved she hopped to another. Jumping from bolt to bolt she traveled as far as she could, away from the village of hurtful memories.
Skylars tears mixed with the rain as she played hopscotch with electricity. It wasn't until she was panting for breath and her legs gave out that she stopped.
As Skylar fell to her knees, she finally understood what the moon had told her.
Skylar Haul had died.
She was now, and would forever be, Skylar Storm.
