TWO: ASSEMBLY

Mama

Mama, I hope you're proud of me. I took all the awful things they did, and turned them into empathy. Mama, I hope you're proud of me, I may have let their poison under my skin, but I let it drip out of my fingers as poetry.

Today marks the end of the first marking period, two are in each semester and I was ready to finish my senior year off strong and make my family proud back at home. Since there was no Claire.

I tap Aubree's shoulder gaining her attention. Channing's award Assembly was today. Everyone I shared a space with was on the honor roll for the first semester of the school year. So we were all going to the assembly.

"Aubree, you look good!" I sign with my hands. I was non verbal since elementary. It took the girls I shared a space with some time to understand and connect to me but we worked through it and now are closer than ever.

Aubree had just gone out for an outfit for the assembly. She was one of those who had their college tuition prepaid and went shopping every time she had the chance. She was never snobby about it and often brought gifts for everyone.

"Aubree, can I borrow those flare jeans?" Lorelei asked if she was begging to have those jeans for ages. I smiled at her shameless begging as Aubree handed them to her.

I loved having them to live with at St. Channing. Everyone had their own personality. I wouldn't be able to leave them anytime soon. I wouldn't be able to take it. Even though I never talked to them using my actual voice, a language barrier was never the problem.

The assembly started at six.  It was three already. I was wanting for Yvette to come back to do my hair.

I didn't even get dressed yet. I heard a loud knock on the door, more like a banging sound, and got up to see who it was. "All of you will not believe what I just overheard." Yvette sat the bag of braiding hair down.

Yvette was always just "hearing something" but we all knew that she was all about the gossip.

"What?" Lorelei immediately got off of her side of the bed and went over to Yvette grabbing a lighter out of the pocket of her hello kitty sleepwear pants. "At four-twenty some new kids were planning to go behind the football field and smoke their ass off before the assembly.

"Who?" Lorelei asked, "I haven't had anything in three weeks, Wyatt since  got sent home."

Wyatt would sell around campus and sometimes would invite Lorelei to smoke with him without charge, how he got away with it was when the staff would so dorm checks he would have his roommate pretend to take the nastiest shit known to man and hide the rest in the bathroom.

That excuse couldn't keep working.

St. Channing's was a great school to put on college resumes but

I decided to wear a black turtleneck, with black jeans and a silver necklace with a star at the end "Everyone's ready to go?" Aubree took her purse and keys off of the side table with a smile. "It's all you can eat."

I nodded.

Aubree's car was a pink jeep with two rows of seating, ironically she did all the changing and editing to the car she wanted like a heart-shaped steering wheel, fluffy cup holders, and comfortable seating with cushions hand-made.
