FOURTEEN: Different Ways

Grief is what food is to me,
Since the day you left me
I carry the tears in my eye sockets
As the memory of you keeps me sane
Nothing gets better
Your death was so bitter
Your soul is missing

NARRATOR

Cheyenne sat on the bed of her old room as the old memories of the same plain four walls started to rush into her head. The first day of Freshman Year, to be specific.

Claire was sitting on her bed picking out her afro, her favorite style by the way.  She sat with a straight posture, and a hand held mirror in hand. Claire was wearing a brown butterfly drape sleeve tie front crop-top with a matching brown skirt.

"You don't have to be scared, y'know. In your four years of being in high school no matter how you feel you just get up and go anyway." Claire could see the nervousness in her eyes, her leg was bouncing up and down, and where her smile once laid there was a frown.

That did not help.

Claire was a senior, she had been doing it for the last few years and she came out fine. "And you know Ma, would have still helped even if she said she wouldn't." Claire walked over to Cheyenne and hugged her tight.

'I'm not raising any babies!' was her favorite line I guess now technically she lied.

What made today even worse was it only three weeks after Cheyenne had her firstborn, Colt Angelic Martin.

Long story short, Robert got lazy. But Claudia was no fool, she may not have been the best mother but when she got wind of what happened she got him arrested, and charges were pressed. It was clear Claudia was going to raise him as her own and that was that.

That all happened in two months, a speedy trial.

Now, she had to put her big girl pants and walk into high school.

The duo was up a few hours early before school just so they could discuss all of the questions Cheyenne had about high school. Even though she didn't speak, Claire was able to read her mind.

Claire stood tall to her full height  5'6, and helped Cheyenne off the bed. Today was going to be a good day.

Cheyenne closed her eyes and let the memory leave as they always did. She walked around the room looking at some of the things that had bittersweet memories and mixed feelings. Being home was fine. But she did miss her roomies back at St. Channing.

Breaking Cheyenne's thoughts were Chantel coming into the room, no knock at all, Cheyenne really felt at home.

"I didn't know he was dropping you off." Chantel sat down on the bed. Chantel what you would call 'Hopeless Romantic' any boy could give Cheyenne attention and her sister would think they would be getting married in three days.

"He is a good friend." Cheyenne put some of the stuff she was holding down. "Does anyone else come in here?" Suddenly changing the subject.

"Everyone. We all miss her dearly, Cheyenne." Chantel said but it wasn't even slightly convincing.

Cheyenne hated when the family said or talked about how much they missed Claire. They barely knew her, they didn't know about her dreams to take everyone and move to a better neighborhood or how she loved her mother for who she was now and forgiving her for what happened then.

All her dreams burned with her and now belong to an urn nobody cared like Cheyenne cared. Cheyenne didn't reply. Chantel frowned. "We all grieve in different ways."

As Austin was on his way in his halloween costume, he was thinking about Cheyenne as he always did, but more specifically her thoughts about him as anyone else would think about their crush.

But the question that kept popping up was, Did she know he liked her romantically? Since the day he came to his fathers school he made sure that the whole school knew that he wanted her, he punched a guy for her, he pretended to not be able to understand classwork just to spend time with her.

It was very obvious that he wanted to pursue a relationship with her. Or maybe he had to show it in different ways.

So, he took a turn to the nearest piercing shop.

Austin always thought his looks were one of his strong suits, not a lot of guys could look like him it was a blessing clearly. So he was going give himself a little touch up something to make him look flashy to show out for his woman.

Austin always was a tad bit extra.

As soon as Austin came back to Cheyenne's house everyone was in their costumes and all the children were too excited to trick or treat. Austin couldn't stop looking at Cheyenne even though his piercing was sore but Cheyenne in that dress just made it all better.

All of the kids were getting candy at one of the first doors while Austin & Cheyenne were far behind them in comfortable silence until Cheyenne asked a question "What's wrong? If you want to leave it's fine."

Also one of the longest things Cheyenne said to him and that was negative. Did he have to dry hump this girl to make her see he wanted her badly?

"No, I'm having a wonderful time with you." Austin smiled and looked back at her, a genuine one. "I'm just a bit sore." Austin started to rub his shoulders and groaned.

"What happened? I'm sure I could fix it." Cheyenne started to touch his shoulder trying to find out what was wrong. Austin smirked, "Only if you play basketball with me."

"Basketball?" Cheyenne was not good at basketball at all but she could whoop his ass in football.

"Yep. I have a ball in the trunk." He said, popping the 'K.'

After all of the festivities of halloween, it was around five and the rest of Austin's friends were on their way back and Austin and Cheyenne only had a few minutes to spare to play ball and say bye to her family members.

It was show time for Austin. He had his basketball shorts on and was waiting for her to come out of the house. His piercing was still very sore; he just couldn't wait to show them off to nobody but Cheyenne.

Cheyenne came out after saying bye to everyone and was ready to play ball.

They dribbled the ball for a little bit, and it came to light Cheyenne didn't know what to do. She dribbled the ball as if it was flat. "Are you serious?" Austin started to laugh as she was dribbling the ball with her wrist.

Cheyenne threw the ball at him as he sat on the bench in her backyard. Austin caught it before it hit his face and Cheyenne didn't say sorry she just tied her shoes.

She was getting comfortable.

Austin took his shirt off due to the sweat and started making shoots with the ball and he was making shots.

This time Cheyenne sat on the bench and she had seen something she didn't see before a shiny silver thing pierced on his chest.

She was quiet for the rest of the night.
