My eyes fluttered open and my head was pounding. I groaned as I sat up, not knowing where I was. I just know that I wasn't tied up anymore, I was sitting on a bed and had bandages around my wrists from where I had struggled to get out of the ropes. My eyebrows knitted together as I tried to piece together where exactly I was at. There was a glass of water and a pill next to it beside of me on the nightstand. I immediately recognized it to be a Tylenol so I took a sip of water and swallowed the medicine. Then I chugged the rest of the glass and placed it back on the table. I took in my surroundings; I was in a bedroom. There was a small tv in front of the bed on a dresser, a fish tank in the corner of the room, a mini fridge beside the dresser, a bathroom connected to the room, my bag of all of my weapons near the fridge, and a window next to the bed.
There was a knock at the door, interrupting me from my thoughts, and in walked Joseph Seed. Before he closed the door, he whispered something to someone on the outside. He proceeded to walk over and sat on the bed next to me.
"You hit your head quite hard, yeah?" Joseph spoke softly. "I see you already took the Tylenol and drank the whole glass of water."
"Yeah, I guess I did. I was fucking parched." I snapped at the man and he looked taken aback.
He chuckled at my response, "I'd say so."
There was a moment of silence.
"Where am I? And why am I not tied up anymore? Better yet, why haven't you killed me already?" I asked him multiple questions I wanted answers to. "It could've been so easy. You should've done it when you had the chance."
Joseph sighed, "God has a purpose for everything and everyone. He gave Jacob a purpose. He gave Faith a purpose. He gave John a purpose. He gave my followers a purpose. He gave me a purpose. And he gave you a purpose... I know what it is, Morgan. But it's for you to figure out. And it's your choice. It's your choice of taking that gift, that purpose, and embracing it... or casting it aside... Killing you is the last thing I want, especially since I know the plan God wants for you."
"Listen, Joseph, I need some answers. Not some fucking parables." I stated matter-of-factly, crossing my arms over my chest in frustration.
"Everything unfolds according to God's plan, child... I did not ask for this. I was chosen... And you see, our world is on the brink and everyone knows it... We're hurtling towards the end and no one is willing to do anything about it! So what are we supposed to do? We just sit back and await the inevitable?" Joseph spoke as if he were preaching. "The Collapse is near and the world is crumbling all around us. And I don't claim to be a perfect man, but I saw what is coming and I chose to act. To lead... I can save you. But you have to have faith... Just know that God has a purpose for you, Ms. Morgan; I've seen it." He explained, staring deep into my eyes. "I hope you choose correctly... You just have to believe in me." Joseph whispered softly and looked away, on the verge of tears, which kind of made my heart break a little. "However, I know that you're too stubborn and angry at my family and I right now. And you'll probably never forgive Jacob for what he's done to you that you don't even know yet. But eventually, I hope you see the light."
I chuckled at the last few sentences he spoke, "You just want me to join your stupid cult, but I'm not having it. I'm not a believer; never have been, never will be." I stood up a few seconds after my response, and tried to shake away the sympathy I felt for him. "And I'll never believe in you, that's a promise." And without a second thought, I brought my fist back and punched his jaw.
He didn't seem effected much by the blow to his face, and stood up in front of me swiftly. I tried to punch him again, but he was expecting it this time and caught my bandaged wrist; it wasn't enough to make me scream out in pain, but it wasn't gentle to let me know he means business.
"You need to stop letting Wrath consume you, child!"
With my other hand, I grabbed his forearm and threw it back to release my wrist, and kicked his shin. Joseph howled in pain as he clutched his leg. Then I quickly punched his temple and that made him fall to the floor. With no hesitation, I broke the glass that I had drank out of and got a big shard; my left hand opened the window next to the bed and my other hand began to cut the window's screen. Once I cut it open, I put the shard of glass in my pocket and tried to vault the window, but a hand grabbed my shoulder, pulling me back into the room.
"Guards!" Joseph yelled, calling out to the guards outside the room. "The Deputy is trying to escape!" And with that, an alarm sounded, alerting everyone that I was fleeing.
"Just let me go!" I screamed, jerking myself out of his iron grip.
"I just want you to see God's grace. I want to save you from your sin, so you can join us in Eden's Gate." Joseph spoke calmly, "I didn't want it to be like this. I didn't want things to go this way. It could've gone a whole lot smoother if you were more compliant!"
"I don't need your god's saving!" I yelled as I elbowed him in the stomach, causing him to release me.
And this time he didn't even try to hold me back; he just stood there and watched as I was getting ready to vault the window.
"God will guide me to you." Joseph whispered as I stared at him. "It's predestined by the grace of God."
"Father!" A cultist shouted from the other side of the door. "Where's the Deputy?! Did she escape?!"
"Yes... She's headed for the hills. Find her." Joseph stated, a dangerous look in his eyes as I snatched my bag of weapons and left.
And then I heard the bedroom door burst open with a bunch of Peggies piling in the room...
