I wrapped an old t-shirt around my mouth and nose to act as a mask to protect myself from the radiation; I wanted to breathe in as little as possible and this was the best way I could think of (although it might be stupid) while I trudged in the freezing, ash-filled world, trying to find any sign of life. Goosebumps formed on my arms as I crossed them, rubbing my limbs in an attempt to warm myself back up. Then suddenly, I heard a shout.

"Is that you, Dep?! Oh my god, I thought you were a goner!" A familiar gruff voice exclaimed in happiness as they sprinted up to me, enveloping me in a big, tight bear hug.

"Eli? Shit. I heard you needed help, and well, I'm here." I chuckled, hugging him back, his long beard tickling my neck. "Have you heard from my girl, Mary May? She was supposed to come and help you guys."

He let go of me and he smile fell a little bit, "I appreciate that, Dep. And naw, I hate to hear that. But I'm sure she's nearby. Can't be too far. She knew where we were. I was able to contact her on my radio."

"Yeah, she left me a note saying that." I sighed. "Let's get back to Jacob's bunker. I got this duffel bag full of shit y'all might need."

"Thanks, Dep. Always savin' our sorry asses."

"It's what I enjoy doing." I smirked at him (although he couldn't see it). "What else would I be doing in my free time other than rot in Dutch's bunker with the rest of the Seed family,"

Eli chuckled, "Ya know that reminds me. You have no idea how grateful we are to have you. And you killed Jacob for us. You killed him while we couldn't. That's courageous."

"Pfft. Not really courageous. I felt nothing but rage... I'm just glad I avenged my brother." I stated, scanning my surroundings, on the verge of tears thinking about my brother.

"You're a strong girl— admired by many, including me. I wish I could be half as strong as you are." Eli flashed me a small, genuine smile as he patted me on the back.

Once we made it to the outside of Jacob's bunker, I handed him the duffel bag loaded with necessities. "Here you go. If you need anything else, just give me a shout on the radio. And if you see Mary May, let me know. I'm worried about her."

"Will do, Dep. Will do. Stay in touch."

"Of course." I grinned up at him before I turned to walk back to Dutch's bunker.

"Are you sure you don't want to stay with us? Even though we have low supplies, it's gotta be better than staying with those psychopaths." Eli offered, a melancholy look on his face.

I nodded my head in response. "Yeah. I can deal with it. Plus I gotta make sure Mary May's ok."

"Alright, Dep. I'll see you later."

And with that, I made my way back 'home.'

Nearly an hour had almost passed and it was getting darker and colder. At this point, I was probably close to hypothermia, but I kept going. I couldn't and wouldn't stop. Then, I heard a scream, a very loud feminine scream nearby. My heart plunged to my stomach as I ran toward the sound as fast as I could. Seconds later, I found my girl, my whole world, on the ashen ground with a large knife deep in her stomach. The blade's handle was sticking out, but the entire dagger was lodged inside her.

"Fairgrave!" I shrieked, fear making me tremble at the sight, my feet planted in the dirt. Then she groaned in pain, causing my legs and mind to start working again. Once I made it to her, I held her face in my palms, forcing her to stay awake and to keep looking at me. "Hey, hey, hey, girl. Don't go to sleep. Now ain't the time."
