Season two, episode six:

The Age of Steel.

- ~ -

Lynette's heart remained thundering in her chest no matter how far away they walked from the hatch in which Cybermen lurked underneath. It was almost like she could feel it all around her, the static of living death buzzing in the air, pricking at her skin, stinging her eyes. Her hands quivered slightly, tension strumming through her body, spiking at every sound that echoed somewhere in the shadowy distance.

The Doctor was acutely aware of the woman's state, shoulder brushing by hers, hand reaching to connect with her own. It was daunting, to have to look through the thick mist that surrounded them, even for the Doctor. Even for a man who had stared death in the face enough times to become friends with him.

Suddenly, Lynnette slapped to a halt, eyes wide, breath halted. Fear ripped through the two as they stared at the girl, awaiting some kind of horrific scream. When none came, the Doctor shook her shoulder, voice a hushed whisper, "Lynnette? Firefly? What is it?"

She barely acknowledged him, the faint sound of deathly metal whispering in her ears, "Can...Can you hear that?"

Mrs Moore - Angela - furrowed her brows, she could only hear the methodic drips of rain clacking against iron pipes, "Hear what, dear?"

"The-" Lynnette stopped just as the metal sound did, she waited, it was gone, "I thought -I...Never mind, I must have just imagined it."

In truth, she wasn't so sure.

Cautiously, the trio continued to creep forward like scampering mice in a twisted game of Cat ad Mouse. The Woods girl shivered at the thought, knowing that at any time, the cats could pounce, claws primed to kill. She didn't like being surrounded, she hated it, something about it always sturred an unwelcome feeling in her stomach. She couldn't wait to be in the comfort of the Tardis again.

All was silent.

The air was still.

A Cyberman appeared.

Iron feet slammed into the ground, echoing like a gunshot, crying like a Volcher. Cold, apathetic eyes bore into them with an empty gaze. Terror ripped through them, forcing them to still, survival instincts screaming in the back of their heads, long since ignored.

"You are not upgraded," Spoke the Cyberman, foreboding words ringing loud.

Mrs Moore glared hatefully, "Yeah, well upgrade this!"

A device flew through the air, static wisping around it.

The second it hit the Cyberman, its robotic screams filled the air. Sparks of electricity flared over its metal body, no doubt burning it. Its legs collapsed and with a great clank, it came crashing to the cold concrete floor. There was almost something gratifying about seeing a being so impossibly strong become so terribly weak.
