"Alyćia, I'll be gone a while today I have a trip I need to you to be careful while I'm gone, you know how dangerous it can be." My dad Ezal says sitting down at the kitchen table eating breakfast with me. " I know Papa, I'll be safe I promise," I say picking at the huevos motuleños he had made us. "I lost your mother I can't lose you mija." He says as I finish my plate putting my dish into the sink walking back to my room to get ready for school. I threw on a pair of oversized jeans, a plain black tank top, my dark green flannel, and a pair of Nike Cortez.
I grab my school bag and put a few notebooks and pencils inside before leaving my room. "It's almost fall break papa, and Halloween is soon," I say pulling my long curly brown hair into a few clips. "I'll be back in a week or so, don't have anyone over unless it's Olivia or Monse, and call me every night I'm trusting you." He says giving me some money for while he's gone and the spare keys to the house. "I've gotta go I'll be late for school," I say pushing my money into my bag quickly hugging him then running out the door. I walk down the block until I meet up with Olivia, Ruby and Jamal, "what took you so long?" Ruby says stepping around me so I'm beside Olivia between him and Jamal. "My dad, he's leaving for a trip and he had to lecture me as per usual." I say as the three of us walk towards school. "Tell me you're going trick or treating with us we're already down two, we need a fourth at least." Jamal says looking at raising my eyebrows. "Yeah, I've never gotta celebrate the way you guys do and you gotta go with us!" Olivia says grabbing my hand
"You still haven't talked to César and Monse have you?" I say shaking my head as we approach the school. "We're trying so is that a yes or no." Ruby asks stopping at the school entrance. "Fine, I'll go." I say seeing a red Chevy Impala pull up knowing Spooky was dropping César off at school. "We've gotta go." Jamal says grabbing Ruby's arm and pulling him into the school as César gets out of the car slinging his bag over his shoulder.
"You've got to be kidding me." I mumble walking over to him receiving looks from everyone in the car. "Can I help you?" César asks as I glance over at the guy sitting in the driver's seat and then back to him. "Are you still mad at your friends Ruby and Jamal?" I ask crossing my arms over my chest. "What's it to you?" He asks and I can hear the men in the car whistling before speeding off. "Well see they want to apologize or talk about whatever happened between you guys but they won't because they're being cowards and now I'm being drug into trick or treating with them." I say shaking my head and following him as he walks into school. "I don't see how any of this is your business Alyćia." He says sounding frustrated stopping in front of me. "Listen I'm not trying to be an ass to you, so don't take it personally." He says before walking off.
