"Ms. Castello, your guest is here." A nurse says opening the door, my eyes feel groggy as I try to search around the room looking for them. "I'm here, Alyćia," Oscar says walking toward the bedside. I look over at him soaking in his presence.
"I need you," I say feeling choked up as Oscar grabs my hand and the nurse leaves the room closing my door. "Tell what happened." He says kissing my knuckles. "My brother he caught me on the block and drove me here to Compton he shot me and left," I say wishing I could hold on to Oscar so tightly he'd never leave. "This is my fault," Oscar says closing his eyes breathing in.
"No Oscar you couldn't have known this would happen I-I didn't even know." I say stuttering over my words looking up at him. He lets go of my hand pulling a chair closer to my bed sitting down. "You could have been paralyzed or even killed don't you understand this shits dangerous," Oscar says getting frustrated. "I know and my life was dangerous before you got involved, everywhere in Freeridge is dangerous," I say wanting to fight back but barely being able to lean forward.
"You just put yourself as a target in a gang war." He says sighing his eyes scanning over my face. I don't say anything else, instead, I lay back thinking about how he ran me off less than 24 hours ago. I'm not begging him to stay with me or be by my side. Not long after a nurse and Doctor Torez come into the room.
"Ms. Castello, your emergency surgery went well, the wound didn't break any bones luckily." She says pulling an X-ray out and holding it towards the light for me to see. "But we did have to cauterize some blood vessels and give you quite a bit of stitches." Dr. Torez continues to explain before being interrupted by Oscar's phone which he mumbles apologies stepping out of the room to answer. "We will be keeping you overnight since it's so late and to watch how your injury holds up." She says putting the X-ray back and the nurse takes over and Dr. Torez leaves the room.
"We'll be giving you a few prescriptions, and a sling and wrap to wear." She says and I nod letting her know I'm following along. "We did run some of your blood work, and congratulations, you are pregnant, still early term, not far enough to tell a gender." she says smiling at me softly making me tear up. "I'll get out of here and let you get some rest, just page the nurses station if you need anything."she says sweetly before leaving the room.
Not long after Oscar walks back in sitting down where he was. "So what's your sentence princess?" he asks looking over at me as small tears well up in the corners of my eyes. "A day and a half at most," I say looking at him as he reaches towards my face wiping off my tears. "I'll be right here." he says giving me a half-smile leaning back in his chair.
