Chapter 12- The Disappearance of Will Byers
Also known as:
(The Vanishing of Will Byers; part 2)

Valerie awoke in bed to sunlight streaming through the windows, "Shit!" She exclaimed.

"What?" Henry groaned.

"The power went out for a second! The clocks stopped running!"

"Shit!" Henry pushed the bedsheets off him.

Both of them are in their underwear. Valerie was also wearing a short sleeved shirt. The adults scrambled around the room.

Henry is buttoning his shirt. Valerie is putting her police jacket over.

"Henry! Catch!" Valerie tossed Henry his jacket from the washer.

Henry caught it but in the process fell forwards on his face, "Ow." He grumbled, he was pulling up a pair of pants.

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah." He replied, pushing himself off the ground.

Valerie put her watch over, her tattoo from the lab. That was the only thing that hid it other than her sleeve.

Henry fastened his watch, adjusting it so it would cover his tattoo.

"Do we have time to eat?" Valerie asked.

"I don't think so." Henry checked his watch, "Yeah. We don't."

"Damn it." She grumbled, hearing her stomach.

"Isn't there food at the station?"

"Yeah. There is."

"Let's just eat there."

"Okay." Valerie slipped her boots on.

Henry tossed the keys up in the air. They got in the car. Henry drove to the station. They got out of the car and walked into the station.

"We're so late," said Henry.

They walked through the front door. Two of the officers were sitting around a table playing cards. Valerie poured herself a cup of coffee.

Jim Hopper, the Chief of Police walked in, with a cigarette in his mouth, looking like crap, "Oh, hey. Morning Flo. Morning everybody."

"Hey Chief." One of the officers said.

"Damn! You look like hell, Chief." Said the other.

"Oh, yeah?"

"Yeah."

"Well, I looked better than your wife when I left her this morning," commented Jim.

Valerie laughed at the comment. Flo walked over to Jim and removed the cigarette from his mouth, "While you were drinking or sleeping, or whatever it is you deemed so necessary on Monday morning, Phil Larson called. Said some kids are stealing the gnomes out of his garden again."

"Oh, those garden gnomes again." Henry groaned, "I'm on it. Again." He said with an eye roll.

"On a more pressing matter, Joyce Byers can't find her son this morning."

Valerie spit her coffee into her cup, "Okay, I'm gonna get on that." She said, "Just give me a minute. Mornings are for coffee and contemplation."

"Joyce is very upset." Valerie walked towards her office,

"Haven, she's already in your-"

"Coffee and contemplation, Flo!"

She walked into her office and saw a woman sitting in a chair, she immediately stood. Valerie sighed, she filed a missing person's report.

"I have been waiting here over an hour, Haven!" Joyce complained.

Valerie sighed deeply, "And I apologize again."

"I'm going out of my mind!"

"Look, boy his age, he's probably just playing hookie, okay?"

"No, not my Will. He's not like that. He wouldn't do that."
"I mean, my mom thought I was on the soccer team, when really I was just screwing Jaxson Greenwood under the staircase at school, so-" Valerie said, in the most English accent.

"Look, he's not like you, Haven. He's not like me. He's not like most. He has a couple of friends, but, know, the kids, they're mean. They make fun of him. They call him names. They laugh at him, his clothes-"

Valerie's eyebrows narrowed, "His clothes? What's wrong with his clothes?"

"I don't know. Does that matter?"

"Maybe."

"Look, he- he's a sensitive kid. Lonnie-" Valerie sighed, pressing a hand to her temple, "Lonnie used to say he was queer. Called him a fag."

"Is he?"

"He's missing is what he is."

Valerie leaned back in her chair, "When was the last time you heard from Lonnie?"

Joyce scoffed and sat in the chair, "Uh, last I heard, he was in Indianapolis. That was a year ago. But he has nothing to do with this."

"Why don't you give me his number?" She picked up a pen and paper.

"You know, Haven, he has nothing to do with this. Trust me."

"Joyce, 99 out of 100 times, kid goes missing, the kid is with a parent or relative." Valerie explained, putting the pen and paper down.

"What about the other time?" Joyce stammered.

"What?"

"You said, 99 out of 100. What about the other time, the one? The one!"

Valerie grimaced as the word 'one' was left Joyce's mouth, "Joyce, this is Hawkins, okay? You wanna know the worst thing that's ever happened here in the three years I've been working here? Do you wanna know the worst thing? It was when a cow bit Francis Kreppi's chest, because it thought that his chest was food."

"Okay, fine. I will call Lonnie. He will talk to me before he talks to a-"

"What, a pig?" Valerie joked.

"A cop! Just find my son, Hav," said Joyce, her voice breaking, "Find him!"

Valerie stood and went to find Jim, "Chief, Joyce said that her son was hanging out at Mike Wheeler's house yesterday with two other boys, uh- maybe you should try, talking to them at school?" Valerie suggested.

"Haven, where are you going to be?"

"I'm going to Joyce's house. I'm going to take a look in the woods behind their house. This Disappearance of Will Byers is quite weird."
