Moonstone's POV
The first time Moonstone heard a scream, she knew Starclaw was
in trouble. She didn't know if it was her sharp hearing or sister's intuition.
She had just been sitting in her history class, bored out of her mind. Before she had even been able to breathe fire, the queen had made sure that she knew everything about the great war and the dragons. That was all they taught in history now. No more epic tales of great wolf warriors saving the day. No more stories about how Elara was founded by the ancients. Just the same old, 'the dragons are bad!' and 'they must be destroyed!' Moonstone already knew everything thanks to the queen.
She had been poking holes in the leaf she was taking notes on when all the commotion happened. She had been the first to jump to her claws, her wolf ears pricked as high as they could go. She fought past the wolves, dodging claws and tails.
She eventually got so irritated she growled and bit the nearest tail that smacked her in the face when she heard a familiar yelp.
"Moonstone, are you alri—" The teacher said right before the first screaming wolf ran past. This time everyone jumped to their paws and raced out of the room to see what was happening. She was one of the first to get out of the class which was why she got trampled by a stampede of terrified wolves. She fought past the wolves, dodging claws and tails.
She eventually got so irritated she growled and bit the nearest tail that smacked her in the face when she heard a familiar yelp.
"What's going on!" she shouted over everyone's screaming. She steered her friend to an empty classroom so they wouldn't have to shout over the screaming or try not to be trampled.
Alpine took three deep breaths before she could speak again, and even then, she was still trembling. She was finally calm enough to tell me what happened, and before she could even finish, she was racing down the hallways towards Mr. Czar's usual classroom. She had him right after Starclaw so she knew exactly where to go from there. She usually stopped and talked with her sister somewhere in between both of their classes.
Before she knew it, she had arrived. That's what happened when she wanted to go somewhere fast, all she had to do was snap at a few wolves and suddenly there was a perfectly clear path in front of her. Sure was handy when it was market day in the town square. She saw Ms. Avril, the school's principal, and all the teachers crowded around something glowing an odd violet color, whispering.
"What's going on? Where is my sister?" She shouted, making all the teachers jump and turn around. One dropped a cloth over the form they were huddled around. She could tell the form was a wolf. Sometimes it surprised her as well how stealthy she could be, especially when she wasn't even full grown yet and she was already almost towering over the teachers.
"That is none of your concern, Moonstone." Ms. Avril said in her usual clipped voice. She acted like this was some class drama she wanted to butt into. "Right now, you must return to the other students out on the lawn."
She didn't seem to realize that this was her sister she was talking about. Nothing absolutely nothing ever came between her and her sister's safety. She had always had a fiery loyalty to Starclaw. She thought it was because out of all the wolves in Elara only Starclaw had been kind to her all these years. Cearly Ms. Avril didn't understand that she would stop at nothing to make sure she was okay.
Rage, hot and deep, started to burn inside of her. She had only felt that once more before. When a dragon the battle field had almost succeeded in tearing Starclaws throat out. He had had her pinned under his talons and there was no way Starclaw could have escaped. Her vision had gone black just like it was doing now and the next thing she had known the dragon was laying in shreds below her claws and her sister had been staring at her in amazement.
