the monster
12th november 1983.
Drumming her fingers against the counter to the beat of the Blondie song blasting across the room she sighs when she hears the bell of the store go.
"Welcome to Ray's." She says halfheartedly not even looking away from staring at the clock that's counting down the minutes until she can go on break.
Carol elbows Tommy, snapping him out of looking at some posters, he turns, both of them crossing their arms, watching as Steve waders over to the front desk, "Hey."
He steps into her view with a smile and she slowly lifts her eyes to meet his. He gestures for her to take her headphones fully off which she does, "Hi."
"Do you have any Bowie?"
She watches him carefully as he leans against the counter blocking her from the view of his friends behind him who he can hear talking under their breath, "Have you looked? The store is full of him."
"Can you help?"
She sighs and nods, pushing herself away from the desk, "What are you looking for vinyl, CD, cassette?"
"Cassette, please."
She nods leading him over to that section ignoring the glares from Carol and Tommy, "God, your friends are dicks."
"Trust me, I know."
She gestures to the cassette section, specifically the 'B' labelled section and he nods in thanks.
"I actually need one this time."
"Why?"
"Dad's birthday is tomorrow and I totally forgot."
He mumbles it without really paying much attention, she notices the far off look in his eyes and she places a hand on his shoulder, "Everything okay, Harrigton?"
"Hmm, yeah, yeah. Look," He brings a cassette out, clutching the Ziggy Stardust album in his hand, "This is great thanks, my dad will freak, he loves Bowie."
"Harrington." She mutters quickly, watching him turn the cassette over a few times to look it over.
He pauses, hands shaking slightly as he looks up at her, "What?"
He sighs walking over to the counter, leaning against it and turning to his friends, "I'll be out in a few, wait in the car."
As they walk backwards they make circles with their fingers beside their head, whistling lowly before giggling, and Steve laughs at them as they go backwards.
He jumps when he turns around and Dallas is already there, holding her hand out, "7.9-"
"7.99, yeah."
He drops the money into one hand, reaching for the cassette with the other but she brings it back.
"Look, I'm not exactly good at being a friend, or a person really- but I can tell something's bothering you, and I can also tell that they're not helping."
