the upside down
24th december 1983.
Dallas raises her fist, knocking on the door of the Wheeler household.
She's greeted by a smiling Mrs Wheeler, who ushers her inside to the warmth, "He's downstairs, wait here, I'll call him for you now."
"Thanks, Mrs Wheeler."
She disappears down the stairs of the basement leaving Dallas to rock back and forth on the heels, hearing hushed whispers and laughter she turns her head to the living room.
Watching Nancy lean back into Steve's chest as he places a kiss on the top of her head. She chews on her lip as they smile at each other, wrapped up in the warmth of the fire and their love for each other.
Steve has a Christmas jumper on, little snowmen sewed onto it. She watches them for a few seconds, neither of them noticing her as she stands there, hands by her side, wrapped in nothing but a jacket.
Hearing little footsteps she smiles as Dustin and Lucas appear, she crouches by her brother wrapping him up in his scarf and zipping up his coat.
"You say goodbye to everyone?"
"Yes."
"And thank you?"
He leans around the corner, "Thank you, Mrs Wheeler."
"Merry Christmas you three."
"Let's go."
She opens the door for them both to go out first, "Merry Christmas, Mrs Wheeler."
She smiles, waving them off before busying herself with the food for tomorrow.
Lucas hits Dustin's arm, nodding to Steve who is watching Dallas as she ushers them out, fussing over if they'll be warm enough on the way home.
"Dude, he totally has a crush on your sister." Lucas whispers to Dustin as they walk ahead.
"No, he's got too much love in his eyes for Nancy to even see my sister," Dustin whispers back looking at Dallas as she walks behind them, head down, hands shoved into her jacket pocket, "That's why she's always so pissed off."
Lucas shrugs as he grabs his bike, pushing it down their driveway as they start to pedal off, "Hey, not too far, okay?" Dallas calls after them, her own bike at her side as she wheels it out onto the road.
"Okay!"
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───
Dallas is awoken Christmas morning by Dustin landing on top of her, "Get up, get up, get up!"
She groans, shoving her face into the pillow, "Santa came, come on, Dallas! Come on!"
She groans when the dog starts lickign her face too and finally she sits up staring at him, "What time is it?"
"Five."
She groans, one and a half hours of sleep, she gets up watching him run out of her room with giggles, she glances at the wrapping paper still lying on the floor, scissors and tape beside it.
She'd spent the entire night wrapping all the presents she had gotten for him, their mother had forgotten again. So it fell to Dallas.
She grabs her cardigan, wrapping it around herself, as she passes her mother's room she takes a peek into see her curled up under a pile of blankets, closing the door she shakes her head as she walks into the living room, Dustin is already sat on the floor by their tiny tree.
He leans over, handing her a small little terribly wrapped in newspaper present, "You first."
"You got me something?"
He nods quickly, "Of course I did, you're my sister."
She smiles when she opens it up, and she smiles even wider when she sees what it is, a new cassette, 'Everybody's Gotta Live by Love'.
"Your uncle Hopper helped me pick it out, but I paid for it, with money you gave me for pocket money, but it's from me."
She holds her hands out and he giggles falling into her open arms, she hugs him tightly, resting her cheek on his head as she sniffles and wipes at her face with her sleeve.
"Why are you sad?"
"I'm not," She promises, squeezing him a little tighter before she lets go and pulls back to look at him, running a hand through his curly hair, "I'm really happy, thank you, Dustin."
She sets it down and gestures for him to open up his own presents, which he does. She sits with Mac on the sofa, watching as her brother makes his way through the presents she got him.
It's not much, some new comics, cool new toys, a remote control R2-D2 which she thought was cool herself, a cat, some clothes and this new backpack he wanted for school.
About halfway through he finds one with his sister's name written on it, "Hey, this is for you."
Her brows furrow and she takes it from him slowly, only her name is written on it, nothing else, brows furrowed she opens it as her brother goes back to opening his own.
A book falls into her lap.
The Shining.
