(Narrator's POV)
Steven looked around the chamber and noticed a wine cabinet. Eclipsa must enjoy a good drink, he figured. Granted, so did he ever since he reached the age of being able to do so but he was careful unlike his ex fiancee. If Connie had one flaw that was glaring, it was her tendency to be a massive lush. She never cheated on Steven because of it, but it definitely led to a lot of fights she got herself into.
"Hmm? Something catch your eye, Steven?" Eclipsa asked as Steven motioned to the wine cabinet after being brought back to reality from his own headspace.
"Yeah. Wine was a favorite drink of my ex fiancee. Even if she couldn't control herself when drunk." The hybrid said as Star laughed.
"She couldn't hold her liquor? Believe me: I know how THAT feels. Anyway, I'll be heading out. Gotta go meet up with Janna. See you two later." She said before leaving the two alone as Eclipsa sighed as she looked at the hybrid.
"Steven…..I must ask you: How do you expect others to be able to understand you if you do not open up to them?" She asked as Steven looked at her. Why would she ask him that?
"What do you mean? I just don't enjoy talking about myself. I've always been like that even before….all of what happened. I've never been someone who opens up about himself. At least not easily, anyway." He replied as Eclipsa chuckled.
"Oh? So what you're saying is that you will only talk to someone you feel comfortable with talking to? Not to pry, but did you not have anyone in your family that you felt comfortable enough to open up to? Or even your fiancee or any close friends?" She asked, her chuckle fading away as she saw the look of sadness on Steven's face.
"No. I loved my family but….I never trusted them enough to open up to them. I know that sounds horrible but it's more complicated than you think. I was always the one who they counted on to carry the load. But the problem is that I carried it for too long and no one offered to take some of it off of me. Instead, they just piled more onto me. And my fiancee was no different. I know they didn't mean to do that, but the fact is that……" Steven began to say…
"That you know they put too much on you. More than you could bear on your own. But you can't find it in your heart to put blame on any of them. Even though you harbor a deep anger towards them for allowing you to bear that weight, you can't find it within you to direct any of that anger towards them. And judging by how you are now, I'd say that all of that blame that should go to them? You've directed at yourself. And you've done so for a long time with no one telling you not to do that. Am I correct?" Eclipsa asked as Steven looked at her.
She had read him like a book.
Sighing as he sat on the bed, Steven placed his hands on his face in frustration. The years had taken a toll on the hybrid even if he didn't always show it. Even before the attack by Bluebird, everyone could tell that he was drained and exhausted emotionally and mentally. That's why Connie did her best to keep him active and the Gems never wanted him to be at home by himself or really to isolate himself at all. They all made sure Steven knew he was loved and appreciated.
Which made the attack by Bluebird hurt even worse and why it was so easy for Steven to blame himself rather than his family: They all had saw him struggle and wanted to make things better for him and did their best to do just that. And it felt as if all Steven did to repay them was cause them all to get killed. Part of him knew that it wasn't his fault. That there's no way he could have known Bluebird would attack so brazenly. But as is the longtime case with the hybrid, it was a matter that he couldn't help but feel he could have prevented if the circumstances were different.
"Steven. I can tell just by looking at you that this is something you've struggled with for a very long time. So much so that it's taken a massive toll on you. And I want you to know that here on Mewni, you are not alone. You do not nor will you ever have to bear such a weight on your own." Eclipsa said with a smile as Steven looked at her. Soon the both of them were smiling and also blushing once they realized their hands were joined.
"Uh! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to…uh…I mean…" Steven began to say until Eclipsa (who was a blushing mess herself) cut him off.
"It's…quite alright. I….don't mind, really." She said as things were quiet for a moment before Steven looked at her again.
"Um….I know this is pretty out of the blue, but….do you want to….spend time together sometime? You know, just the two of us? I'm sure there's a lot of nice places in Mewni and…..ah what am I doing? Sorry for asking." The hybrid said as Eclipsa smiled.
"I'd love to, Steven. But….if I didn't know any better, I'd say you were asking me out on a date." She said as Steven looked at her.
"Well…it can be one if you want it to be." He replied as Eclipsa smiled at him.
"Then I gladly accept. And I know just the place you and I can go." She said as she kissed him on the cheek, causing the hybrid to blush.
For the first time in what felt like forever, Steven felt at peace.
Eclipsa read Steven like a map. How will the date go? See ya next chapter!
