I sat on the counter listening to the code that Dustin recorded on his walkman. I noticed a part of the code that I seemed to understand slightly and grabbed the translation book. Then I grabbed the marker and wrote on the whiteboard. "Неделя длинная."
"I don't understand, what does that mean?" Dustin asked.
Then under the Russian text, I wrote "The week is long."
"Well, at least we're getting somewhere." Robin said.
"I'm gonna try and see if I can figure out any more of it. I'll tell you guys if I make any progress." I said as I put the headphones back on and started listening to it again while looking at the translation book.
Steve and Robin walked back over to the ice cream serving counter.
"Are you two dating?" Robin asked, joking.
"What? No." Steve said.
"You seem like you like her, though." Robin said. "And she seems like she likes you too. So, if I were you, I'd make a move before it's too late."
Steve looked at me and then back.
"You really wanna get her mixed up in all of this?" Robin asked Steve.
"I don't know.." He replied.
"What if this gets dangerous?" Robin asked. "Do you really wanna get her into all of this?"
"I never expected Dustin to ask her about the code but at least she's making progress," Steve said as he walked up to the counter and started serving customers. After an hour or two, Robin and I were able to figure out the rest of the code.
"Ah-ha!" I exclaimed an hour later as I ran up to the whiteboard with the marker and wrote "Серебряный кот питается, когда синий встречается с желтым на западе. Поездка в Китай звучит приятно, если вы ступаете налегке."
"What does that mean?" Dustin asked.
I wrote under the Russian sentence "The silver cat feeds when blue meets yellow in the west. A trip to China sounds nice if you tread lightly."
"Guys come here!" Dustin exclaimed to Robin and Dustin.
They ran to the back room and saw the code written in English.
"The week is long. The silver cat feeds when blue meets yellow in the west. A trip to China sounds nice if you tread lightly" We all said together.
"I don't get it." Steve said. "What does it mean?"
We started walking out of Starcourt because it was now closed.
"I guess you were wrong Dustin." Steve said. "They weren't evil Russians."
"Steve if they are evil Russians, do you really think that they would just say what they are plotting straight up?" Robin asked.
"Exactly." Dustin said. "If they are evil Russians then they are obviously going to cover it up with a code!"
I stopped walking when I noticed the pony ride.
Robin noticed I stopped walking. "Katlyn what's wrong?"
Steve looked at the pony ride and then ran up to it, digging through his pockets looking for spare change.
"Anybody got a quarter?" He asked while kneeling next to the pony ride.
"Sure you're tall enough for that ride?" Robin asked, jokingly.
"Quarter!" He snapped at Robin.
Robin got a quarter from her pocket and threw it to Steve. He then put it into the coin slot and the ride started.
"You need help getting up on there little Stevie?" Robin asked, jokingly again.
"Shh! Will you just shut up and listen?" Steve said as we listened to the music.
"Holy shit." Dustin said. "The music! The music!"
Dustin got the Walkman with the code out and played the end of it and the same music played in the background.
"I don't understand." Robin said.
"It's the exact same music on the recording." Dustin and I said.
"Maybe they have horses like this in Russia." Robin said.
"Indiana Flyer? I don't.. I don't think so." Steve said. "This code.. it didn't come from Russia. It came from here."
