After we'd been paddling for a while, the compass started going crazy again and Nancy said something. "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, slow down. Slow down guys."
We slowed down and all looked at the compass.
"Whoa." Steve said.
"Guys, what's going on?" Dustin asked on the walkie-talkie. "C'mon guys, talk to me. What's going on?"
"Uh, Dustin, your compass has gone from wonky to a wonky with a capital 'aah!'" Robin said into the walkie.
Steve started taking his shoes, pants, socks, and shirt off and I looked at him. "Steve, what are you doing?"
"Somebody's gotta go down there and check this thing out." Steve said. "Unless one of you three can top being a Hawkins High swim co-captain and a certified lifeguard for three years, then it's gotta be me. No complaints, all right?"
I rolled my eyes.
"Hey, I'm not complaining." Eddie said. "I do not wanna go down there."
Steve took his shirt off and got ready to jump in. I tried to not make it obvious that I was staring at him but Robin definitely noticed. She smiled.
"Hey." Eddie said while handing Steve a flashlight inside of a bag so it wouldn't get wet. "Good luck."
"Thanks." Steve said.
"Steve?" I said as he looked at me. "Be careful."
I smiled lightly as he nodded and dove into the lake. After almost a minute, I started getting worried if he was okay.
"Where are we at, Wheeler?" Robin asked.
"Closing in on a minute." Nancy said.
"Okay." Robin said.
After a little bit, Steve popped up out of the water, startling us and causing some of us to scream.
"I found it." Steve said, still in the water.
"You found it?" I asked.
"I found it. Yeah. I found it." Steve said.
"Dustin, you're a goddamn Einstein." Robin said into the wakie. "Steve found the gate."
"It's pretty wild." Steve said, just floating in the water while holding onto the boat. "It's more a snack-size gate than the mama gate, but still, it's pretty damn big."
Then Steve started got pulled into the water by something but came up fine. Then the thing pulled him all the way into the water this time.
"Steve!" I yelled, like he could hear me.
We all kept yelling for him, but he didn't come up.
As I got ready to jump in, Eddie said, "Wait, wait, wait. You're not going in there, are you?"
"Just wait here." I said.
"No Katlyn!" Robin and Eddie yelled as I dove into the water after Steve.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I whacked one of the bat-looking creatures that was eating his waist away from Steve with an oar.
"Hey there." I said and whacked more of the bats away from Steve.
Robin and I were working on killing the one that was choking Steve and Eddie was working on making sure that no others came and tried to attack us.
"Katlyn, behind you! Watch out!" Eddie yelled as a bat attacked me from the back.
