Stede told them about the plan Ed had made to steal a dinghy for the two of them in which they'd escape, rowing away together.
He told them how the plan was cut short because of yet another accidental death of a Badminton twin.
"I was scared. Not just because of Chauncey's untimely demise. I mean, what would they do, add another ten years? Who knows if the war against the Spanish will even last that long?"
"I was scared. Of my past catching up with me. I wanted to believe Ed and I could be happy together." Stede was remembering that moment on the beach.

"You didn't tell him" said Black Pete.
"So, when Ed went to find you at the dock, and you weren't there..." Olu questioned.
"In other words, you snuck out in the middle of the night." Wee John said.
"No, no, it wasn't like that." But it was no use. Stede knew that's how it must've looked to Ed. That's what he must've been thinking this whole time.
