Chapter Eight

"Hey, you took your time tonight." I was greeted by Theo with a magazine in his hand perched on top of a brick wall. We were outside, on a street I didn't recognize. Tall trees surrounding the pavement I was standing on and rows of cute and colorful houses sat on its edge. I walked past him folding my arms. I haven't decided if I am mad at him or the situation but keeping my distance from Theo seemed to be the safest option until I make my mind up.

"Hey, Shai! What's up?" Theo shouts after me hopping down from the wall. "This isn't the greeting I was expecting!" I let out a frustrated chuckle and stopped in my tracks spinning around on the spot.

"What is all of this?" I gesture around the homely street we were standing in. I shake my head slightly "I didn't ask for this, this is so complicated"

"What and you think I did?" Theo steps towards me reaching for my arms but I stepped back before he could touch me. His eyes dropped hurt and his eyebrows furrowed making me want to let go of my frustration and hug him for the rest of entity. "This isn't a bad thing Shai"

"It doesn't make sense. Good or bad"

"I'm just as confused as you are trust me."

"I just want to know what the fuck is going on," I shout finally losing my cool. I feel like he's dodging the questions. I just want a straight up answer, none of this bullshit. Theo sighs and finally looks up at me.

"I don't want to overwhelm you"

"Please, I just want some kind of explanation" Theo looks back at me, still with a glint of sadness but he sighs scratching his beard and nodding his head.

"I don't fully understand it myself but it's called night spawning. That's what this is. When we sleep instead of being in an unconscious state, our mind is taken into a parallel world. We can go wherever we want, but it's advised not to cross paths with the real world."

And now I understand why he was hesitant to lay it all on me. I have a thousand and one questions and I know I won't get answers to them all. I watched as his jaw clenched as he searched my eyes looking for a hint of a response. I stood mouth agape desperately trying to make sense of what is going on.

"Shai, say something" Theo pleads. I clear my throat and try to think of a question to ask first. I decide to go with,

"How comes I've only just met you then? Shouldn't this have happened my whole life?"

"If you meet yourself in this world, your memory is erased and you start again, that's why crossing paths with places you know is dangerous, so I'm guessing that's what happened to you."

I start to understand a little more and wonder what awake Theos like. Whats his job? Does he have any hobbies? A pet?

"so, you have a real life too?"

"Yes"

"A girlfriend?" I ask with a gulp.

"Nope" He smiles at me, deciding now what be a good time to take a step forward. "Do you have a boyfriend"

"Nope" I mimic.

"Glad that's settled" he smirked

"So you're real?" I double check.

"This is all real, we get the privilege of two worlds" He holds out his hand for me to take and I gladly comply. I enjoy the familiarity of his skin on mine and the warmth radiating through my palm and into my veins. I nudge in close to his arms as we begin to walk along the street, almost like a couple.

"Is there more of us?" I ask

"Of course, you've just got to find them, it's a big old world" I nod, there must be a small percentage of people who have this ability. The chances of us being in the same place at the same time was highly unlikely.

"So where we going?" I ask

"The world's our oyster" He smirks with a squeeze of my hand.
