EPISODE ONE: THE BOY IN THE ICEBERG

AVINA ALWAYS HATED THE COLD. She hated the way the frost bit and nipped at your skin as you worked. She hated the way the warm was sucked out of anything the second you stepped outside. She just hated it. Too bad she lives and breathes it everyday and has practically no chance of ever leaving. Just too bad.

Avi huffed, watching as her exhale turned into condescension in the crisp air. She was currently squished between her two younger cousins, Sokka, the oldest of the two, and Katara, the youngest. They were out on a little row boat searching for fish, since their tribe was running low on food.

Ever since the adult men of the tribe left for war two years ago, supplies had been running low. Usually, the men would go out fishing and hunting, leaving the chores and cooking to the women and children. But now, since their departure, that job was up to Avina, Katara, and Sokka; the latter only begrudgingly agreeing to let his older cousin and sister help with the tasks that he viewed as "unfit for a girl." Good thing they weren't unfit for a girl, because if they were the whole tribe would've been dead by now.

"It's not getting away from me this time," Sokka claimed determinedly from the left side of Avi, and from what Avi could guess, by the fact that he was hunched over the side of the boat holding his spear up in the air, that he was talking about a fish. "Watch and learn, you two. This is how you catch a fish."

"How many times have you said that over the past hour, Sokka?" Avi said, leaning over slightly and trying to find a fish for herself in the icy waters below them. As she heard Sokka retort something back (Probably something sexist, if Avina had to guess.) Avi saw Katara attempting to waterbend what she assumed was a fish out of the water.

Katara raised her hand and after a few seconds, a splash erupted from the water and a bubble rose out of it. When Avi looked closer, she saw a fish swimming in the bubbles' waters. Avina smiled with pride at her younger cousin's accomplishment; Katara was always trying to improve her waterbending at every chance she could, and Avi couldn't help but be proud whenever she made a new waterbending achievement.

"Avi, Sokka, look!" Katara exclaimed in joy as she kept the bubble afloat, watching as it bended and moved in the air.

"That's great, Katara! Just guide it over to me and I'll—"

"Shh, you two. You're gonna scare it away," Sokka interrupted, still bent over the side of the boat with his spear. "Mm. I can already smell it cooking."

"But, Sokka, I caught one!" Katara reasoned, still maneuvering the bubble around in the air; now attempting to guide it towards Avina and Sokka. "Hey!" Katara yelled, still trying to get Sokka's attention whilst hovering the bubble over Avi's head, which lead to the bubble crashing into the end of Sokka's spear and bursting; causing the fish to fall back into the water.

Sokka's attempt at catching a fish was ruined as the water from the bubble drenched him, causing him to let out a yell of annoyance. Sokka turned towards Avina and Katara with scorn, glaring past Avi at Katara. "Why it is that every time you play with magic water, I get soaked?!" he complained as water dripped from his clothes onto the boat.

Katara scoffed. "It's not magic. It's waterbending. And it's—"

"Yeah, yeah—an ancient art unique to our culture, blah, blah, blah...." Sokka cut Katara off, turning back around and ringing out his ponytail. "Look, I'm just saying that if I had weird powers, I'd keep my weirdness to myself."
