I woke up to the smell of chocolate cake.

"Good morning," said Sodapop, literally six inches away on my face. He rests his head on the cushion of the couch. "How are you my morning glory?"

"Shut up Soda," I say, sitting up. I wipe my eyes and unstick my brown hair from the side of my cheek which is covered in drool. Ew.

"Hey Aster Rose," Ponyboy says, sitting next to me. He starts eating off his plate he is holding, gobbling up eggs and chocolate cake. "I can't believe you let them eat that, Darry!" I call to Darry. He is in the kitchen and is flipping the fresh eggs, turning them into tolerable delights.

"I figure the boys ought to have a treat for not burning the house down and staying clear of the fuzz," he calls back, smiling. I love it when Darry smiles. It makes me feel like I can be happy too.

"Well, big brother, you know that deep inside that black soul, you love us so much that you can't resist the temptation of giving joy to your kid brothers," Sodapop says, grinning from ear to ear. He goes over to Darry and grabs some more eggs and sits on the floor in front of Ponyboy.

"Hey, Aster Rose? What type of eggs do you want?"

"Um, I guess scrambled would be okay."

I collected my eggs one minute later. Darry told me last night I had to cook breakfast for everyone but he didn't say anything so neither did I.

I even had a piece of chocolate cake.

Me and Ponyboy met Johnny outside of his house an hour later. Ponyboy let me borrow a tank top that said, "Pepsi" that belonged to his mother when she was a teen. It was a little big but it was comfortable and clean.

Johnny came out of his house with his parents screaming behind him, "And stay out you little shit!". I hate Johnny's parents so much that I beat up grass every now and then.

We walked into town and met Dally by the drug store. I haven't seen him for the longest of time, close to a year. I got out of the cooler about a month ago and haven't seen him or caught up. He was looking good.

"Hey Dally," Johnny called out, looking at the ground. He was always cautious around Dally. Everyone pretty much is around Dallas Winston.

"Hey, wassup Johnnycake, Ponyboy," he said in a drunk voice. (He talks like he's drunk even when he's sober) He notices me and smiles even wider. "Hey, hey, hey, Aster Rose is back from the dead. I haven't seen you for like a year. You look different. Did you get boobs or something?"

"Shut up Winston," I warn. "I can still kick your ass anytime and anywhere." The good thing is that if anybody but me and Johnny talked to Dally like that, they'd go home with more bruises than white skin.

"Well, I wouldn't want to go against her majesty's wishes, now would I?" he replied, mockingly.

"You guys are idiots," Ponyboy muttered.

"Well, I ain't the only one here," Dally said.

"So what do you want to do?" Johnny asked.

"Nothing legal man."

All day we pretty much scared the crap out of little kids and smoked. I realized Dally had changed over the past year. He was more rebellious and careless and free. For some reason, I liked it.

We went to the drive in. Dallas insisted on breaking in instead of paying. Him, Johnny and Ponyboy dug a hole under the fence and climbed through.

I decided to climb the fence by the bathroom. There was no way I was going to crawl through the dirty dirt. I reached the top of the chain linked fence and hopped onto the roof. From there, I jumped onto a bench that was a good five feet down. From there, I just hopped onto the earth's ground.

"Bravo, little Rose," Dally said. "Gonna grow up to be almost as tuff as me."

"I'm only a year younger than you, Dal."

"Touché."

We sat behind some girl Socs. I sat next to Johnny and we talked about the beach movie that was on the screen. I told him I wouldn't even pay a cent to see this pointless bikini film.

Dally started to flirt with the strawberry shortcake in front of us. I was getting angry about him flirting with the pretty red head but I realized that it was jealousy.

"Get lost hood!" I heard her yell, which made me chuckle. She looked over at me and gave me a dirty look. I smiled even wider. Poor little Socs, they're all hopeless.

Dally left.

The little strawberry turned around and asked Ponyboy and Johnny, "Are you gonna start on us now too?" She didn't even glance at me.

"No," Pony replied.

"You don't look the type anyway." What is that supposed to mean?? "I'm Sherri, but people call me Cherry cause of my hair.

I couldn't take anymore of her. I went to go find Dally.

He was in line at the concession stand, smoking a cigarette.

"Hey Dally," I said when I got to him. I literally just cut like ten people. Hehe.

"Hey Aster Rose," he said.

"You okay? Got told pretty good by that Soc."

"Shut up about it," he said while grabbing an armful of Cokes. "What are you doing here, blossom? I'd thought you'd stay with Johnny and Pony."

"One, don't ever call me that again or else I will skin you," I said, making him chuckle. "Two, Strawberry Shortcake was pissing me off and I had to get out."

"I like that, Strawberry Shortcake," he grinned. He payed the cashier two dollars for the Cokes. We started walking back over to Johnny and Pony. "You really changed Aster."

"Yeah, that's what happens to teens and old people."

He laughed. "You are a pretty cool Greaser. You dig okay." We got back to our spots and Dally handed everyone a coke.

I nearly fell out of my chair laughing when the Cherry chick threw the Coke in his face. Dally started moving in on her and I looked away. I couldn't watch. I realized I never had a chance with someone like Dallas Winston. He liked perfect girls, pretty girls, and sweet ones. I was far from perfect, I wasn't pretty, and I was the rudest gal on this side of town.

"Leave her alone, Dally," I heard Johnny order. It came to me as a shock. Maybe he was going to be alright. Dally left after they quarreled a little bit more. I chased after him.

"Dally!" I yelled, trying to catch up.

He turned around and slowed his pace. I caught up to him real quick. "What are you doing here? Get your little ass back there."

"I'm gonna be where I wanna be. Right now I want to ask you what you are going to go off doing."

He kicked an empty soda can. "I'm in the mood for some action. I'm gonna head over to Buck's."

"Promise?"

"Promise what?" he asked, kicking the can toward a dog.

"Promise you won't get arrested tonight?"

"Fine. I won't want you buggin' me about it through the bars."

I returned to sit with Johnny and Pony but they were sitting up with the Socs. Two Bit was also intrigued. I sat back down by myself. This is going to be a long night.
