Johnny was awake, and he was going to die.

"Hey Johnnycake," I say, sitting down next his bed. He was laying on his back now, burns all along his arms and pain in his eyes.

"Hi," he replied. He coughed a small cough, and his face went as white as a sheet. "Ow."

"Are you okay? Do you want me to get the nurse to give you some meds?" I ask, starting to get up.

"Naw, it does that sometimes. I'm okay," he answers. I sit back down.

"I have to tell you something. And don't reply right away. Hear me out," I say and he nods. "I'm pregnant, Johnny. And I don't know what to do."

He chuckles. "Why would I know what to do?"

"Cause you are smarter than me."

He sighs and is silent. All I hear is his steady breathing. "Don't let it go," he says after a few minutes.

"But I don't want it and I will carry guilt if I give it up for adoption. It's such a mess."

"Why are you worrying about it now? It's nine months, you will know by then."

He was right. Just those simple words made all the sense in the world. It amazes me how sometimes the answers in life are so simple.

"And I'm going to be here, now and then too. I ain't going anywhere," he says, then coughs harshly. This time he doesn't open his eyes again. I look at his heart rate and it's still going so I know he isn't dead.

I've always known Johnny was who I was supposed to be with. He was quiet and shy, but he fought for what he believed in and was caring and sweet. Dallas was cold, harsh, and a hood. Everything was wrong about him. But I loved that adventure and wanted to finish our story.

I kiss Johnny on the forehead. "I'll see you later, Johnny Cade." I knew he was going to die. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow. But I wasn't going to say goodbye. When I was thirteen and at my grandmother's house, she told me a quote by Peter Pan. "Never say goodbye cause goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting." And I don't want to forget Johnny Cade. I never will. I left.

Johnny was asleep, and he was going to die.

The rumble started about ten minutes ago.

Dally escaped the hospital, me helping him. I caused a scene saying that I had just been raped and he was right behind me, chasing me. It was pretty funny actually, the nurses all believing me and them feeding me and making sure I had enough blankets. Yeah, like that was gonna help.

I tried talking Dally into letting me participate in the rumble tonight but if he said he saw me there, he would kill me. I'm not one to doubt him so I stayed put.

I saw Alex there again. She was waiting for her grandmother to wake up so we both sat in the hallway together.

"So there's a rumble tonight?" Alex asks, trying to break the silence and awkwardness.

"Yeah, I was wanting to go but it's a guy thing tonight. I'll join in on the next one," I reply.

"I hope Soda doesn't get hurt, it'll kill me if he does." She starts fiddling with her hair, braiding it on the side.

"He really likes you, but with Sandy still here, I don't know how that will work out," I say.

"Well, I'm going to tell you somethin' and it's gonna sound really cheesy but I have a super cool superpower. I can tell the future!" she announces and I just blink. "By the way, that wasn't true."

"No kidding," I laugh. "But I have a feeling you and Soda will work out."

"Thanks," she smiles. Soda and her both have the exact same smile, the one who tricks people they are so innocent yet they are such rebels.

"By the way, I'm Aster," I say.

"Alex. I'll see you later, okay?" I nod and she goes into another room that I assume her grandma is sleeping in.

I decide to just go back to Johnny's room. When I get there, a girl is next to his bed and holding his hand. She is just blabbering and I feel angry for a second, but decide not to pounce on her.

"What are you doing?" I ask, putting my hands on my hips. Screw being tuff, I gotta be sassy.

"Oh!" she stands up and looks at me. "Are you his girlfriend?"

"No, his ex, if you want to go into detail. Who are you?"

"I'm Olive. I met Johnny down in Windrixville at a grocery store. When I heard he was down here, I decided to visit him."

"Well, I hate to tell you this sister, but he isn't really in the position to be visiting right now."

"Shut up Aster," Johnny mutters.

"I'll shut up once she leaves." I don't know why I didn't like her. Maybe it was because she talked to Johnny, or maybe that he wanted to see her more than me. I don't know.

"Quit it. Olive?" Johnny says.

"Yeah Johnnycake?" Ahhhhh, this is very annoying.

"I just want to be with Aster right now, if that's okay."

"Yeah, of course." She bumped my shoulder when she left and I glared at her until she left.

I sigh and walk over to Johnny. "Hey Johnny."

"I'm dying Aster."

"Yeah," I say, choking up. "I know. But you're going to be okay." He didn't reply. His breathing was like music, but of course songs always come to an end but this was my favorite song, and I wanted to listen to it play forever. "Hey Johnny? I want to tell you something. I love you, okay?"

"But you love Dallas too." He breathes heavily, and speaks after a few minutes of silence. "It's okay. I love Dallas too, he is my brother. I just hope the best for you too Aster."

"Johnny, I don't want you to go," I cry. I know that sounds really cheesy coming from a girl like me, but it was the truth. I didn't want to say goodbye to Johnny Cade.

"I know, I know," he said.

Dally and Ponyboy entered the room and the rest of the time was a blur. I couldn't focus.

"Stay gold Ponyboy," he whispered. "Stay gold."
